MA Riding Instructors Licensing Exam

Hey guys!

I’m taking the licensing exam this coming Friday and was wondering if anyone else who has taken the test has any suggestions on things to study. The study guide provided was pretty much exclusively the laws with a few suggestions on other things to take note of but I just wanted to know what else I should be focusing on.

Thanks!

What organization is this thru? Or is it a state thing? I became a certified riding instructor thru CHA. Their main focus was on safety, structure of a riding lesson, awareness and preparedness. This is probably something different but I’m curious.

May want to change the title a little?

In the main page, it reads MA Riding Instructors Lice.

My mind was going, why do MA riding instructors have lice?

Hope you get the answers you are after.
Good luck in your licensing tests.

Wow, I never realized this was a thing in any state. http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/agr/animal-health/equine/riding-instructor-licensing-generic.html

It has been a while since I took the exam, but they wanted you to know the laws pretty much verbatim, so memorize those. The rest of the exam is so basic it’s laughable- very elementary safety and horse health questions, label parts of the horse, etc. Know the laws backwards and forwards and don’t worry about the rest.

Lol. I had trouble with the parts of the western saddle. I think I got a 97 but that was 25 years ago.

I think MA is one of the only states that requires a person to get a License to teach horseback riding.
I took the test many years ago, but I believe it has been revamped in the past few years. The questions on the test when I took it were outdated and somewhat bizarre. It was also odd that they bunched us in with the people taking the MA Pesticide Applicators test.
I haven’t seen the newer test, but you should know both English and Western tack, the Mass. General Laws pertaining to horses, basics about feed, conformation, illnesses, all the basic stuff you should know. Honestly, I think the Commonwealth started it as a revenue generator, but in the past few years, there has been an effort to improve the test.

When I took it years ago there were a few questions that threw me, the one that comes to mind was how fast (mph) was the canter. Not sure why I needed to know that but I totally guessed!

Oh! Just remain focused like I was during my Bar Exam Prep (ha-ha). Anyways, good luck with your test and focus is actually what you need, also practicing a lot will be able to help you. I am studying in a very fine law school because of these two tips I got from my mentor. Be it any exam!

I realize this thread was bumped up. But for anyone interested there is legislation currently in Ways and Means to no longer require the instructors license.

The intention was to make sure qualified people were teaching riding and it was thought that the state would be a pioneer for requiring it. Whelp they are still technically the pioneers

Just reiterating that this thread was bumped by a now-deleted spam post.

Thanks!

Oops! Didn’t see that! Sorry

Does anyone know if this passed before the session ended? I saw something that indicated it was still in transit but can’t find anything saying it actually passed.

It was kinda buried in S480, which is also about requiring stables to do background checks for anyone working with minors, which turned into S2183, which got parked in Ways & Means to die: https://malegislature.gov/Bills/190/S2183

Almost all of the text of it is about the background checks; the part relevant to instructor licenses is the “oh yeah and ditch ch.128 sec.2A” near the end.

Thanks. That’s what I inferred from what I read but I’m not literate enough in legal things to know if that’s what actually happened.
