Maclay Finals grants? **UPDATE: Post 44!**

My barnmate just finished 2nd at Maclay Regionals tonight, and we are desperate to find a way to get her to Finals, because nobody deserves it more. She braids and paints jumps to help fund her showing, and her mom works for the shows on the side to fill in the gaps. She brought her horse along from dead green, never been to a horse show 6 year old to a polished hunter winning just about every accolade imaginable in our zone.

I could go on and on but I’ll get to the point. She doesn’t have the money to go, but this is kid is exactly what I want this sport to be. What grants exist that she could apply for to help fund a trip back east? We’re on the West Coast so the trip is pretty expensive. We know of:

-Leo Conroy
-USHJA making a dream
-our state H/J association

What am I missing?

How very exciting for her, congrats! I don’t know anything about grants, but I have known riders that have funded big trips using more traditional fund-raisers in the community… like silent auctions, raffles, t-shirt sales, etc. Might be another helpful option, good luck to her!

Congratulations to your barn mate!!! She sounds like a true horsewoman and a great rider.

Are other kids from the West Coast planning to come to Kentucky?

Yes, we know a few in our area. She’ll be able to share a pallet so that will help. It’s just absurdly expensive from our area to go back east, no matter how you slice it. We’ll definitely be putting together fundraisers as well, just curious if there were other equestrian groups that do financial assistance grants for hard working juniors beyond what we know of.

Good luck to her. If it’s any consolation. Ky will cost less then Indoors.

Would she want to try a gofundme to crowd source it? I don’t know much about it, but people seem to raise a lot of money that way sometimes.

When I was a kid, the barn I rode at would have fundraiser fun horse shows for various groups.

The barn provided the facilities and the insurance as their “donation” and volunteers from the benefit group would have a food stand. Local businesses would sponsor the awards for the classes and we’d make thank you signs that were displayed along the ring.

All the classes were fun things that didn’t require a judge, just time keepers and the like. Classes such as egg and spoon, dollar bill, water glass, break and out, musical chairs, etc. No formal show clothes were allowed, only attire rules were boots, long pants and helmets required for all classes except costume classes.

We charged a couple dollars per class and made a bunch of money. People who normally didn’t show would come because the shows were extremely casual and fun.

We’ve had a few requests already to start a crowdfunding campaign, but the mom is a little uncomfortable with the idea. We’re hoping to talk her around but in the meantime we’re really looking to put in as many grant/scholarship applications as possible.

Schooling show fundraiser was tossed around, but the schedule is very full for the next few weeks and our timeframe is short. We are hoping to piggyback on an existing schooling show, maybe charge some money for riders to ask the judge about their round, do a fun class, some raffles, etc.

541Hunter–I know gofundme takes a lot, but I really think someone should start one for her. We all adore her and cannot think of anyone else so deserving.

There are other options that don’t take as big a cut, but mom has asked me not to start one so I’m holding off for now. I’ve gotten so many requests, I hope I can talk her into it.

Can she find a sponsor?

I watched the class. She nailed the workoff!

We’re all so proud! That horse hasn’t always been easy to bring along, and to see her pull off a pretty tough test was such an inspiring moment.

Is there video somewhere online?

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCniqQ1KDpPBDS2svRGy99dw/videos first video

That’s actually not her  The video is private and I’m not sure how much they’d like me posting it on a public forum where it can be searched, but MHM I’ll PM you the link!

Got it, thanks!! She looks super.

Ah, well that was 2nd place at region 8 which is west coast to me  The link was on the other Maclay post. Either way, hope she figures out a way to get there.

We’re Region 7—still west coast, just north!

One thought which might be cheaper is to lease a horse on the east coast so you don’t have the hauling / flying cost.

Good luck!
