Mad Barn Visceral+

Also dragging this up for follow up.

Also, has anyone compared giving their horses Visceral to G’s Formula? (G’s- cabbage, oat flour, hemp and carrots…pretty simple list of ingredients)

I have put my horse on Visceral on and off throughout the seasons since my first post on here about the product. I’ve seen great improvement but the last couple of weeks he’s shown extreme signs of ulcers. He has not been on visceral so I purchased their bigger container to see if this is the issue at hand. It’s only been a week so hard to say at the moment.

Now looking at G’s website. I would have loved to have given this product a try. It is cheaper as I just spent $160 for the same amount of days supplied.

I want a product that heals hing gut but I guess that’s just never going to happen whether his ulcers just come and go, and I heal them and then stop I’m not totally sure.

My rides have been the worst ever lately. Extremely difficult to ride, especially to the right. And very resistant. But all summer he was a super star. So frustrating!

For what it’s worth, I started my new filly on this just after Christmas. She was a vicious stall weaver and would rather chew my fence than eat hay.

Her stall weaving has nearly disappeared. She does still chew the fence when she’s “done” being turned out, but she will at least eat her hay out there now! Major improvements.

She also is happier to be groomed which is a nice change!

She is also on their omneity pellet too. The farm I work for preps their sale horses on it and the change in them was impressive since switching to madbarn. My filly’s overall coat and weight has improved since starting on it too.

Anyone else had a chance to try G’s? Or compared it to Visceral?

Well, G’s is made just a bit down the road from me, so I did try a bucket when the product first was a available. I didn’t find it made a bit of difference to my horse. I have not tried Visceral at all, so can’t compare.

I just ordered Visceral for my gelding, am hoping it makes a difference for him because I’m at the end of the rope otherwise.

Hi, @LadyB
any update on your re-use of Visceral?
Just re-scoped my mare yesterday, and while she had a few pinpoint ulcers, of more concern was the delayed gastric emptying. :sigh: (will it never end with this horse- I’m developing ulcers myself trying to manage her)
Now, the vet who scoped her lives on the mainland not far from the US border, and recommended the Purina Outlast, which, of course, we can’t get here in BC and living on the island I can’t just up and cross over to pick some up. I was hoping you were having great results like your last use so I can confirm this is actually a product that would be a good alternative.

I used visceral and it worked great! I decided to be cheaper and buy slippery elm bark and marshmallow root (2 of their ingredients) and feed a tbsp a day. I find to work just as well but much better for my wallet. Currently, my horse has been on slippery elm since July, and I have seen a big change.

Just a point - re Succeed - I thought it was focused on Hind Gut ulcers, not gastric ulcers? The Oat flour provides the MOS to help those… (Mannan Oligosaccharides))

Right, hind gut issues.

Very delayed, because of life. I ended up never using it again, but only because he no longer shows signs. I have him on a Canpressco Camelina Oil which seems to be working well for his gut. He hasn’t shown any signs of irritation, but I also have not had him scoped. He was on Equine Omega Complete, but at $100/mth I couldn’t justify it. Switching to Canpressco seems to be keeping him happy.

HA, @LadyB - totally understand!

I did buy a bag of MadBarn when I was in the local GreenHawk last spring, and she ate it, but reluctantly… Didn’t really notice much difference, and it was more managed feeding than supplementation- you, know, a couple of pounds of hand-chopped hay and grass pellets every couple of hours rather than lots of supplements with a large feed- that seemed to keep her much less unhappy.

As soon as our grass started to grow, she turned a corner and was great all summer, then, before the grass died off in the fall I had to make a somewhat-‘emergency’ road trip to California (long story) and so picked up 2 bags of Outlast to bring home.
That stuff is the BOMB- she loves it and it seems to do what it’s purported to. I also make sure she only gets chopped hay to eat, or from a very slow feed net so she eats 1 or 2 strands of hay at a time to supplement her 24/7 grazing, and [touching wood] this schedule appears to be working. It’s really being tested right now, with 10-12" snow all this week, so we shall see. I also included the Outlast in every feed this week instead of just before I ride.

Glad to hear you found an economical alternative, and hope it keeps working for you and him.

@fanfayre That’s great news that you’ve sort of figured out what works best for your mare as well. It’s always hard to play the guessing game, but when you do figure it out, its so nice.

@fanfayre I’m on the Island too and am trying to get my hands on some Purina Outlast for my mare with glandular ulcers. Any luck with trying to find it more locally than California? The Internist from the lower mainland told me people there are driving across the boarder to get it, but that’s not really feasible when there’s the ferry involved too.

Has anyone had any luck with the Visceral for glandular ulcers? It says on the website it’s for gastric.

@BadTB
The closest would be Washington State, such as Laurel Farm and Supply in Lynden.
Unfortunately we, as Canadians, can’t get it on this side of the border for some reason, and Purina Canada can’t or won’t develop it or bring it up here.

Depending upon where your hay supply comes from (eg Washington/Oregon???) maybe you could convince the supplier/trucker to bring a bag or more across?

I don’t know about Visceral for glandular- I think they can only be resolved with vet-prescribed medications (?), if I remember the lectures I’ve attended correctly…

Sorry about your problem. Are you anywhere near Nanaimo? I could give you some Outlast to try.
