magnesium

Uckele 2 lb 360 day of magoxide 58%12.95$ which says 4g a scoop. Versus California trace mag oxide 56% 15.8g per ounce 5 lb bag. Which one is better or are they the same? Do either one of those contain iron? If so is it a significant ammount? Also started California trace 2 days ago.

How much does each cost per ounce?

How much do you feed of each?

The ingredients for California Trace are on their website.

Magnesium doesn’t contain iron

Mag oxide is the same thing as magoxide.

A straight MagOx product is not the same as California Trace.

Oh I was told and read online also that magoxide contains iron. I also do know mag oxide is the same as magnesium it’s just one of the forms of magnesium. I just thought I should state that in my post that’s it’s magox. Also I do know California trace isnt the same as magnesium but California trace the company sells magoxide which is the magoxide 56%. But I also wanted to say that I did start him on California trace the vitamin mineral 3 days ago now.

I just didn’t know if one was better for my buck.

I guess there is no magnesium in California trace. So not exactly sure how much to add in daily (I don’t have my hay tested) but I do want to add in some.

Ok, it wasn’t clear to me that you were talking about CAT’s magnesium product, as California Trace is also the name of their v/m supplement.

Like Scribbler said, you have to figure out the cost per ounce and decide which is cheaper. Your total cost then depends on how many ounces you feed.

Yes I’m not sure how much i am suppse to feedbit I do suspect he needs it added in. One once of the magox from ct is 15.8 grams a serving. Uckele is 4 grams per scoop. I did read that magox you can’t over do Bc the horse won’t utilize it if doesn’t need it.

They are both 2lb (unless you get the 10lb bag from Uckele). One is $13, one is $15. Figure out shipping to see which ends up cheaper.

As for how much to feed, general supplementation are in the 10-15gm range.

Oh I thought it says 5 lb on the one sold by California trace

You are right, I don’t know why I “saw” 2lb. So then clearly the CaT product is cheaper compared to the Uckele 2lb, and since you already have that, you’re set. I would feed the 1oz serving for 15gm and see if you get results you’re looking for.

If you do, then see how it goes with 10gm. The goal would be to feed as little as possible to still achieve the results, but as much as necessary.

California trace company has free shipping on there Products so I guess the one from from California trace would be better option

Just kidding they do not have free shipping on all there products. Actually comes out to 29$ when all said and done compared to the 18 from uckele but still prolly comes out cheaper being it’s 5lb

$29/5lb = $.36/oz
$18/2lb = $.56/oz

Thank you

I went with the magox from California trace. Thank you again for your help!

I buy feed grade Mag Oxide in 50 # bags from my local farm coop.
IIRC, last time I got some it was about $20.

One more question. Does alfalfa effect magnesium absorption? Do they need more magnesium if they eat higher alfalfa diet? Just curious on that. Sometimes the rounds I get some have more alfalfa in it then others. Some bales have hardly none and some have 25%ish rest grass on some bales. Not our hay field, from local farmers around the area when I need a round.

I haven’t read all of the posts but it is MUCH better to use a chelated form of magnesium than mag oxide, which is basically just a stool softener. I get magnesium citrate from herbal com.com by the pound. It does wonders for spooky nervous horses and what isn’t used is expelled, so you don’t need to worry about dosing too much. I worked my horses upt to one tablespoon. It is also very beneficial for horses that tie up such as those with polysaccharide storage myopathy, EPSM, or ER. It even improves their gaits, lengthening stride.

Magnesium oxide is quite well absorbed and utilized in the horse.
