I will have vet out later next week when I’m bag from business travel, but anyone have maidens no showing much?
It is possible yes. However, you need your VET to check. Then take it from there.
When my maiden was pregnant, she was not at all pregnant looking at 9 months. I knew she was pregnant, her shape was just a big different, but to the average person, no, she didn’t look pregnant.
Suppose it depends on how you define “big”. My TB maiden mare wasn’t BIG at 9 months…she is much bigger now with her 3rd. But she did look pregnant especially since she typically is very fit.
My other maiden this year was FAT FAT FAT before she was bred. She actually looks better now
Seems like mares that are a bit longer do not show as much.
I have two maidens and while I can see a difference only one really “looks” pregnant. They’re both due mid-April.
I had one last year that was a big girl. She started getting a little bag about two weeks out. Until then there was absolutely no sign that she was pregnant.
A few years ago a maiden I bred never really looked pregnant and didn’t get an impressive milk bag, nor did she wax. She foaled a big colt at 340 days without showing much sign that she was going to do that either. Rather an inscrutable one, she was.
Hahaha - I just posted pictures a few days ago on the Mystic Oak Ranch Facebook page of two mares due about 10 days apart, one maiden, one not. The maiden mare barely has a baby bump - her body is definately thicker, but compared to the old, experienced broodie (who is actually due 10 days LATER), it looks like the maiden is 2 months behind her. Don’t panic - it is a common maiden mare thing.
Last year, I bred another maiden, and she went 382 days, talk about a lot of sleepless nights!
Here’s my maiden TB mare at 300 days. She’s not a very big girl, 15.1 on a “tall” day, and to me she looks HUUUGE. To the rest of my friends she doesn’t even look preggers.
Although my farrier did offer to buy her a furniture dolly last week so that we could just wheel her around…
