Major medical insurance for young horses?

Anyone have major medical Insurance on their young horses? I really wanted to go with ASPCA but they don’t cover horses in my state. I’ve never had insurance for my horses before. Just wondering if anyone has recommendations on where to start.

I was advised decades ago to buy insurance for the first year you own any horse. That gives you an extended period to evaluate the horse and then decide whether you want or need to continue coverage.

How young?

You’ll get different recommendations for what area of the country you are (if you’re in the US?). It might help you to start there. I use a sort of region-specific insurance which finds the best policy for me. I’ve thankfully never had to reach out to them for anything other than renewing a policy, but many people I know have had good experiences, some with horses under 4 years old.

I went with medical for my yearling. Too many opportunities to destroy himself exist! It was pretty reasonable, esp compared to insurance for a 19 yo!

If you need further encouragement, see the thread titled “large open wound on unhandled yearling”!

What insurance did you go with? I’m in Florida if that helps any.

I reached out to many, many, many insurance companies to compare mortality and major med on the filly I purchased in-utero this year. Marshall & Sterling had the best coverage by far and wasn’t super expensive! Fingers crossed we won’t have to exercise it any time soon.

Always, Always, Always insure a new horse for at LEAST the first year of ownership. There are many that you can choose, Great American has been my go to for the last several years. If nothing else, insure for a low amount just so that you have the major medical, as you’re more likely to have to collect on that versus mortality.

I’ve always had my horses insured. I took over the policy for my current horse when I got him (he was insured as a yearling). It is through Horse Insurance Specialists out of TX (where he went to as a yearling) and the policy is currently through The Hartford. HIS shops around for the best policy. I honestly didn’t do a large search, I just took over the policy.

I get mine through The Saren Group. They’re a broker so the actual insurance company is different.

I live in Canada, and bought insurance for full medical, surgical, and death benefit for my yearling when I bought her at 6 months of age. When her insurance is up for renewal, I will increase the death benefit, as we’ve put in a lot of work and time into her development.

Years ago, I got similar insurance for a three year old I bought. I kept the full medical and surgical for a couple of years. It’s very pricey, so after I point, I cancelled it thinking that what I saved in premiums could just be used for vet bills, if need be.

It definitely provides some peace of mind after shelling out a lot of money on a young prospect.

I’m sure there are many companies in the US that would provide this coverage. Insurance will likely need a vet report.

we had the policy’s value amended after daughter’s five month old weanling won a major championship
