Making your own equine body wash

First there was Vetroline, then there was Refreshmint, both of which were pulled from the shelves by the powers that be in Canada for reasons unknown, most likely because a) they contained ingredients that test; or b) packaging was not bilingual.

Anyways, there is nothing really comparable on our shelves here…maybe in other areas??? Dunno! That said, does any one make their own equine body wash? Just looking for something that helps cool the horse and get rid of sweat, etc. Nothing sudsy. Went online last night to search, and most people appear to be using diluted white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Aside from making the horse smell like French Fries, this apparently also repels flies.

Anybody have anything to share?? Many thanks!!

UltraCruz products can ship to Canada. We offer Foaming Shampoo and Liniment washes.

Listerine mouthwash (or the generic version) and some witch hazel. I just pour some of each into a bucket of water and sponge the horse. Probably doesn’t really do much but the horse smells minty fresh.

I’ve used diluted listerine and witch hazel when braiding, because it smells nice and may have prevented some skin issues going from horse to horse. Too much mouthwash can make a horse feel tacky/sticky when it dries, but it should be ok diluted in water or washed out eventually.

When I started riding, we were taught to make a leg brace of equal parts rubbing alcohol, witch hazel and white vinegar. I don’t know if people still do this, how effective it is, or why not use it all over the horse. Have seen vet pour gallon of rubbing alcohol on a horse in shock to try to get its temperature down, I believe. Vinegar will also get rid of soap residue.

I just use dollar store or Walmart/Target brand mouthwash. The green minty kind, which I mix with rubbing alcohol from the same place (Walmart’s rubbing alcohol is often cheaper than the dollar store’s). I suppose you could mix it with vinegar, though I’ve never done it.
