Making your own rope halter?

I’m wondering if there are any experts on this forum who could help me with how to make a rope halter. Especially the sidepull kind, which would be nicer for riding. My mare had a tiny piece of tooth pulled, so can’t use bits for about a week or so.

I found this: http://liz-stout.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-tie-your-own-rope-halter.html

But could any expert tell me if the tutorial is any good (correct)? And tying the rings to the halter still looks a bit muddy to me.

That looks like a neat arrangement - but the instructions would blow my mind!

When you get it figured out, we could place orders through you??

just looking at the diagrams makes $6.99 seem like a real bargain to me

Better instructions here. It’s not that difficult but I buy mine!

…but the OP’s halter has a sidepull arrangement tied into it.

I think I’m lucky. I just have one rope halter that a friend made for me a few years ago. He just sits there and makes 'em without a diagram. Just a plain halter, not sidepull.

I’ve done up a couple of rope halters. End results? They work fine. But I will BUY THEM forever more. Just not worth the hassle!

If you’re looking for a sidepull just buy one. They come cheap.

PS: The halter you linked isn’t a sidepull, anyway. It’s more of a bitless bridle with action on the rings = tightening under the jaw. I’d rather have a straight sidepull, which you could accomplish pretty easily by just knotting rings into your side nose knots, were you so inclined. No complicated rope arrangement required.

Or just buckle your reins onto your current halter. This ain’t rocket science.

(BTW leaving a free end on your lead line like in [url=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uyRaghVfHtg/UmLHhiSePuI/AAAAAAAAScg/otLri_V7FCQ/s1600/20131018_170524.jpg]this pictureis a bad idea if you ever hand graze your horses. You’re just inviting your horse to step on it and pin their head to the ground. Learned that one the hard way, on a thankfully very kind horse…)

I would just really like the rings attached to the sides, somehow. But if it as easy as just tying them there, I’ll try that.

And, well, I want it today  So that’s why it’s better to make it than order it. I’m not sure if the local tack shops have any – and definitely not ones with the rings – so again, easier to make my own.

I made a rope halter tutorial, check it out here. To put rings in the nose knots you must add them at the beginning when you tie the first overhand knot and a second time when you are making the noseband.

Looks good. I made a couple more than a decade ago and just knotted the rings into the first two overhand knots for a simple sidepull. I’m not a fan of the jaw pressure style.

I make them; honestly I think they’re pretty easy to make. However a lot of the directions online don’t seem to have very clear steps to tie a fiador knot. I use the instructions here, starting on the fourth step to allow for proper positioning of the noseband knots.

yes they are pretty easy to make! i’ve made several. Will try to find the link.

My husband is very clever - he makes my lead ropes out of yacht braid and long before Parelli made them I had nice long leads for teaching foals. But I don’t think I’d ask him for a halter, they are so easy to find and buy.

I made one but I don’t think it was worth the effort, honestly.

I bet you could just loosen the knots enough to get a snap or something through.
