Male trail riding boots.

Recommendations for trail riding boots for male/men.

Men’s Ariat Terrain or Terrain Pro

Mr. Gary loves his Ariat Terrain H2Os.

My DH loves his Terrains.

Yup, my husband also likes the Ariat Terrains  He’s had the lace up H20s and the pull on one that looks like a western style boot.

He hated a cheap pair of Ariat lace up paddock boots I originally got him (Heritage?), and asked for, “the closest thing they have to a sneaker that’s still safe to ride in”.

My DH doesn’t ride very much but he pretty much only wears Ariats. He has Terrains, heavy duty workboots and a pair of casual slip ons. He has very wide size 13’s and he said there they first brand that offers wide that is truly wide and feels good right out of the box.

In case you don’t like Ariats for some reason you might check out Blundstones. It’s all I wear and have for years; they wear like iron and are comfortable in the saddle and for walking (originally made for hiking).
The Blundstones come waterproofed with Nikwax and you can re-do the waterproofing easily yourself if you wear them for years like I do. Great for walking in wet grass and riding through high rivers!

I ride in my Ariat Extreme Zip paddock boots. I walk around in them and they’re really comfortable. They have just the right slip for everything I do. It doesn’t matter if I’m jumping, schooling or trail rising. I did a 25 Mile CTR in them and I was good. I wear my leather Ariat half chaps as well.

I wear either three-strap field boots (M1940 Patton Boots) or paddock boots with leather puttees.

The three strap boots at the high end come from Dehner or Der Dau. More affordable options come from What Price Glory and some other sellers. They are comfortable for riding and walking. They are leather and for some that’s a “deal breaker.”

The M1911 puttees can come from Dehner at the high end (not in their catalog but they will make them in either black or brown on request) or from What Price Glory. You can also find good quality canvas leggins from multiple sources.

One thing to be aware of is the sole of any boot you intend to wear astride. If the sole is too aggressive (not at all unusual in hiking boots, work boots, and the like) you are taking a big chance wearing them if you can’t get rid of your stirrup easily. I have an old pair of Navy Working Uniform boots that I tried one day and I could not drop the stirrup with the boots on. It was like the tread was Velcro’ed to the sole of the boot. To dismount I had to get my wife to manually remove the stirrup from the boot on both sides and then slid off. These were English stirrups of proper size so maybe a Western stirrup with wooden tread might have been better. Or not. In any event this is an issue to be aware of.

Packers/Ropers…which are basically lace-up cowboy boots. Great for riding and walking too. I’ve bought these:

I’ve got wide feet, never had any luck with Ariats.
