Oh my goodness - that clothespin feeling! I know it well - I couldn’t figure out why I was so nervous to ride (after a lifetime of riding) but that was exactly it when my hips went bad.
I’m so glad you’re able to enjoy riding again!

Congratulations, @Kyrabee! It absolutely is the best feeling in the world, isn’t it?
I had my hip replaced in May 2023 – I was in such bad pain prior to surgery that I could barely walk (had been bone on bone for awhile); this was my first ride back on a student’s horse - I hadn’t legged my mare back up yet, plus he was narrower! 6 weeks post-surgery, and I had been really applying myself in Physical Therapy
I had my pre-op meet and greet with my surgeon yesterday. Tentatively scheduled for late May/early June.
So happy for you, @Kyrabee!
You will never regret doing this! Be diligent with your pre-op exercises and post-op PT, and you’ll be riding again before you know it.
My surgery was a year earlier, and I was in the same bad shape as @Dr_Doolittle. Being a bit older (I’m guessing) at 75, it took me 7.5 weeks to do my first ride, but it was onward from there. To ride again with no pain felt like a miracle.
Riding is going really well. I think my horse is so happy I can sit in the saddle correctly again. She has been working really well…still legging us both back up but we are doing 5-10 minutes of trot and canter in little bits with lots of walking between. I went over 30 minutes yesterday…and felt fabulous. Walking isn’t pain free…yet but riding is pain free. I do have some tendons issues in that hip and I still haven’t decided if the replacement helped them or not. The Dr felt they would stabilize when the hip was better. Still pretty swollen in that area. Things continue to improve (8 weeks on Thursday).
Jingling for a good outcome Spudsmyguy.
Yes indeed. I got on so tentatively but then went WOW. I shouldn’t have been riding pre-op but as long as I could get on…
