Managing Spay Incontinence - Proin and Alternatives?

My dog has some incontinence issues. We’ve tried everything in the book, done every test, and consulted with specialists at both OSU and Cornell. None of the typical meds worked for her (but didn’t have any adverse effects either) and she is happily living out her days in diapers. I’m happy to share any of my first hand knowledge I’ve gained during this 2 year adventure though!

My old girl just started Incurin this past Thursday. So far, no obvious side effects. I need to give it a bit more time to decide if it’s working or not for her.

Hi All!

Thanks for all the replies. So I managed to order Vetriscience Bladder Strength from the US (luckily friends were coming over to visit so didn’t have to pay ridiculous shipping fees). For the 1-2 weeks I waited for that to arrive I fed her soy yogurt with some ground up flaxseed inside and didn’t notice any leaking in the that time. Now we’ve been using the Vetriscience tablets (only for about 4-5 days so far) but still no leaking.

Seems like her case was mild enough that we haven’t had to go the prescription route. The vet seems happy that these options are working and at this point we’re just monitoring to make sure they continue to work.

There were a few days in there that my girl seemed to be getting back to her happy outgoing self with dogs, but then she got roughed-up by an overly sexed-up male (thank god she’s spayed, I HATE how most owners of males over here don’t neuter) and now is nervous of ALL new dogs.

2 steps forward 1 step back I guess. Now that the leaking problem seems fixed, we turn our sights to the doggy-confidence problem. sigh

I have a small dog (dachshund) who has been on Proin for approx. 4 years. She is small so she gets the smallest effective dose (1/4 of a tab 1x daily) and it has worked great! It helped a lot with her UTIs and leaking. A bottle only costs around $18 at our vet so it’s not terribly expensive.

My older BC has this issue and is on Incurin. It is very cheap and very effective. So much so that she is on a treatment regime only if she actually has a leak! Or has been doing a high impact activity that has been linked with a leak. (Yes, we have regular urine tests to make sure that it isn’t any other issue.)

My vet was talking the other day of a new (or proposed??) regime where they give the bitch a high dose of hormones to simulate a heat cycle. Please do not quote me on this - we agreed to keep Gee on her incurin - and I am not sure whether it was a proven treatment option (esp for younger dogs) or was being studied as a potential treatment option. May pay to ask your vet.

Be careful with the male dogs. If one is aroused by your girl’s scent and tries to breed her, she could be injured internally.
