Mane Growth

My horse has rubbed out a lot of the base of his mane from an ill-fitting blanket, just wondering if there are any supplements that work that won’t break the bank.

Also to note this horse is a very picky eater, he has to check it out first and will eat around things he doesn’t like. So far he has only eaten around peppermints, carrots, apples. He spits out sugar cubes. I’m hesitant to add stuff, but the rest of his mane is so thick I’m just wondering what everyone uses for picky eater to regrow hair.

Feed a good base diet, and genetics takes over the rest. If you’ve been satisfied wit the growth of his mane til now, then it’s just a matter of time. You can’t out-grow genetics.

He’s on 2lbs of PP (alfalfa based feed) and 1lb of Tribute Kalm n Ez and good quality hay, usually as much as he will eat, but if the hay changes from a different cutting/different supplier he will pick at it for a few days and usually eat less and less for the first couple days.

I guess with show season growing I was hoping maybe a supplement would help accelerate it especially since I can’t get rid of this blanket until after this season.

You can get fake rosettes etc I believe.

Feed biotin, and apply MTG topically.

Not knowing what this PP is, I would say you should switch to the Tribute Essential K balancer to give his nutrition a boost. 1lb of the EK is way under-feeding from a nutritional perspective. If the PP is a regular feed, then I imagine 2lb is also under-feeding from a nutritional perspective

I would be looking to replace the blanket asap. A blanket that fits badly enough to do this to his mane, is likely making his neck and/or withers sore.
