Manure Removal

For those that use manure removal services, can you please tell me about the set up you have, cost, pros, cons, etc?

Do you have a loose pile or keep it in a container provided for you.
Thanks

We use Waste Management. WM provided a dumpster and they come once a month and empty. The dumpster is at our barn and instead of paying for another garbage service we also use this dumpster for our house trash/garbage. When I muck the stalls, I leave the full muck buckets outside the barn and twice a week, my husband empties the muck buckets into his tractor and then dumps the poop into the dumster. It works for us.

I cannot tell you the monthly fee but then think it’s probably different depending on the size of the dumpster, how often it’s emptied and where you’re located.

We use a company called Pineview Trucking in PA for our manure removal. They leave a dumpster that we fill by dumping wheelbarrows into the front end loader of our tractor and then into the dumpster. Our dumpster is for manure and shavings only–I believe they compost what they take away.

We also have shavings delivered by them. They bring the shavings in a dumpster, dump them in our bin, leave the empty dumpster and take the full one. It’s a great system! I’d have to ask my mom about cost–I do know that she pays a rental fee for the dumpster and that the pickup fee is less if we’re also buying shavings.

The only con that I can think of is the cost. But we simply do not have room for a manure pile, and there’s way too much to spread on our pastures.

Similar arrangement to the above two. I muck into plastic trash cans, then dump into front loading tractor bucket. The width/length of the bucket on the compact tractor we have is perfectly sized to dump directly into a 3 cubic yard dumpster which is emptied twice a week. We have 9 horses on 5 acres, so needless to say it can’t really be disposed of properly on premises. 8 horses is actually really the threshold for a 2x/week emptying of the dumpster so sometimes it requires some creativity to deal with it. It’s amazing how much they produce

I also use Waste Management - we have a dumpster and they come every other week to pick up. I have 3 horses, the smallest dumpster (cannot recall actual size) and it is overflowing by the end of the two weeks.

No front loader here, we lift the muck tubs and dump into dumpster.

Prices have really increased - it’s around $80+ month for two pick ups per month.

We are on small acreage, so no choice but to have someone haul it away.

Major cons - is in the winter when there is a stretch of below freezing, as the manure will freeze and stick to the sides and will not completely empty. We had a relatively mild winter this year, so not an issue. And then in the summer, two weeks is a long stretch and it can smell.

I used WM in the past. I got the 3 cu yd dumpsters, thats the smallest one, and it was emptied every other week. For 3 horses, depending on the weather (like if it was wet and they were in more), it was a fine schedule. It was $100 a month for me and that was back in 2006-2007. We dont have a front end loader so we would muck into trash bags that lined the muck buckets. When full, tie them and load them all in the back of the truck and drive over to the dumpster and throw them in. At an old farm I used to work at, they had the big dumpster like you see at gas stations, etc. She had a front end loader on the tractor. I would muck into the wheelbarrow, dump the wheelbarrow into the bucket, and once full, drive it to the dumster and empty the bucket. No idea how much that was. It was dumped every week and was usually pretty full though she had 16 horses on a 12 hr out/12 hr in schedule.

Hi friends,
I know that it’s quite an older post but still, I am posting here since I think it would be useful.

Horses are one of the beautiful looking animals in the world. Some of them use it as pets while the others use it to earn money.

I love horses. Presently, I have two at home. One is an Arabian horse and the other is a Belgian horse. As horses are herbivores they have specific dietary and have a unique digestive system. Their long digestive system requires a high-fiber diet that is consumed in small amounts over a long time. Horses actually spend most of their time eating. Until now I haven’t faced any problem looking after them. Now I have decided to buy a pony. It was one of my greatest wish to get a white pony. I have been in search of it for a long time. At last, the search bore its fruit. I will get my pony next week and I’m waiting for that day.

Till now, I have been dumping the food wastes behind the stable in a pit. But here after I think the wastes will be more. I’m very particular that the stable must be clean. Hence, I am planning to have garbage bin to dispose of all the wastes. I would like to know whether is a good idea or not.
Do chime in your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Have you considered making the manure into compost? I have a machine that can generate manure into compost within 24 hours. Please let me know if you need more information.
