I had my mare ultra sounded at 21 days and was very disappointed to have her confirmed open. Even worse was when I found out the stallion that we had bred to had a episode of colic and did not survive. With that being said she would now be 270 days if she was pregnant and lately she seems to be blossoming. She had always been an easy keeper but this is extreme. I have called the vet and he is coming out in a couple weeks to palp her but I am curious what everyone else’s opinion and thoughts are. Here are some photos of the mare.

I can see what you mean. My math is not good but if she is pregers will the foal be here before the vet comes out?
We have two that are also “blossoming” but they would only be at 6 months–I have looked into using a home kit called “wee foal” that can be ordered on line-perhaps that would be an option in the interim? (plus fantastic scenery you have there!)
She isn’t due for almost 2 months so he’ll be here in plenty of time. Thank you we love it out here 
I think it would be pretty hard to miss a 21 day embryo…but crossing fingers for you!
I have one that really blossomed the last two weeks, but he’s a gelding and it turned out to be a mild chronic impaction.
I’ve seen plenty of horses “bloom” without pregnancies, so I would not get your hopes up. I probably wouldn’t palpate at this point; just see if she bags up.
A friend of mine did just have that happen, so yes, it is possible.
I have had it happen. Three times. 1 was a local vet, but the other 2 were repro specialists.

me too and sold the horse so lost the foal
I’ve had it happen twice, two different vets. One was a newby - my regular vet was out with an injury, and I insisted she come check again at 30 days because the mare was not back in heat - she wrote in my file “owner demands another ultrasound”. Well, mare foaled the next year - but foal died at less then a week old:no:
Then my 2nd time - with a repro specialist! Who told me the mare (different mare) had a hemorrhagic follicle , put her out in the pasture and check her again next Spring. Next spring came, and my very fat mare was NOT coming into heat. She gets fat in the Spring anyway - very easy keeper on pasture - so it was easy to miss a baby belly. I asked my new vet to check her, since I’d never heard of a hemorrhagic follicle lasting that long. She stuck the probe in and got KICKED! My (non)foal was born a few months later, his name is Hemi - for Hemorrhagic Follicle:lol: He is now 5 years old!

Both myself and my gf had mares ultrasounded… two different vets, two different years… both of us sold the mares as not in foal… and they foaled in the spring. Mine was u/s at 22 days, hers at 35 days… they say they cant be missed but… it does happen … both mares foaled to that breeding date and neither had been exposed to any other stallion.
My “not in foal” mare: I sent the vet a baby birth announcement card that says “its a boy” ! Now ya have to understand that he also missed a SECOND check. At about 10 mos along when the mare got fat and he told me I just had a fat horse. She foaled 5 weeks later. Obviously this was the local vet and not the repro specialist to miss THAT one!!
I have had it happen a few times. The one mare was leased and I sent her back because I couldn’t get her in foal. She had a nice colt the next year.
Thats the other thing. I never noticed her in heat. Thinking she was open I didn’t pay especially close attention but usually she makes sure EVERYONE notices lol. Does she look like it in the pics to you guys or is that just me?
She certainly has a distinctively drooping belly --has she had many foals?

I’ve been breeding for 27 years and whoever keeps saying pregnancies cannot be missed must not have been at this for decades. Ultras-sounds can miss a pregnancy. We have had them “hide” only to have a 30-35 day palpation verify one is there.
She does look pregnant. Besides looking at her from the side - look at her straight on from the front to the back. Usually the mares have one side that is rounder than the other.
Amen to that! My two mares both had 30 day checks - and were missed then too! Granted, one was a newby vet, but the 2nd was an experienced repro vet. Pregnancies can be missed. Only way to tell is check again… This far along, could probably just ultrasound externally and pick up heartbeat:yes: And see baby staring at you :lol:
My “not in foal” mare never once gained enough weight to look in foal and maintained a svelte figure. Repro vet at the time (who was also a fairly large breeder herself) pronounced her open. Then in mid May the following year she developed an udder and 2 weeks later foaled a perfectly correct, strong, healthy filly on June 1st. So, yes it can be missed by even the most experienced of vets. Your mare has a bit of a suspicious shape to her belly so there could very well be a bun in the oven. Would be a good idea to get her checked out so you can plan accordingly.
