Mare with half her udder swollen..??

Yesterday morning as I was grooming my mare I noticed half her udder swollen. She is not in heat, not pregnant, and not likely to become that way! Not on any hormones either.

She was not like this Friday, I did not ride over the weekend so did not look under there for any reason.

The udder was warm, but not overly so. She doesn’t like her lady parts messed with at all so any further touching would require sedation. I used a flashlight but could not see any obvious injuries or discharge.

I went ahead and worked her, when I finished the swelling had diminished greatly. I took her into the wash stall and gently ran warm water over the udder for awhile, I still did not see any obvious injury.

Any ideas???

My mare did this a couple of weeks ago. It was fine the PM before. Next AM (less than 12 hours later), one side of the bag was huge and hot. Vet came out and diagnosed mastitis.

The swelling went down very quickly. I was shocked at how fast it swelled up. I know for a fact it was normal the night before bc I had been scratching the mare’s naval.

Any idea what caused the mastitis?

My mare’s udder was not hot, just normal body temp warm.

I have a mare that “normally” has the left side of her udder swollen, no heat no tenderness and it goes down with work. I’ve owned her about 15 months now, doesn’t seem linked to cycle in anyway. I’ve had 2 vets look at her as part of checkups/vaccines and no one recommended anything unless there was heat or tenderness. And the usual but hard when everything is solid ice to make sure she gets enough movement 🙄

Sounds like mastitis to me. My mini mare gets a mild case of it occasionally, not sure why. She is insulin resistant and when she has foundered, she gets quite severe mastitis. I find cold-hosing helps, maybe some bute too.
