Mare with no milk yet. Pic of foal added!

I have a mare that is about 345 days along. I checked her out this morning and she had some wax, but still no milk. She maybe got slightly bigger bags overnight, but definitely no milk like all my other mares have had. She is also holding her tail up slightly. Wish I had a pic to post, but her bags are just a little puffy compared to what they normally are. She has not been on any fescue. She was sick this summer back in June and that caused her to lose some weight. She had an elevated temp and went off her feed for about a week. A few of my horses did this and recovered fine within a week or 2. Vet never figured out what it was. She has gained her weight back and is on 12lbs of Strategy H.E. a day, along with free choice hay and grass. I have had her on a mare supplement and a fat supplement.

So what to do? Do I wait and see if she ends up producing some milk? Or have the vet give her a shot now to produce milk or wait until she foals to give the shot? My regular vet didn’t seemed to concerned about it, but I am. I just don’t want to jump the gun and give her a shot when its not necessary, but I have never had to deal with this and wondering when everyone actually does resort to giving their mares a shot. I do realize that if given the shot she won’t produce enough colostrum.

I had a mare get up to foaling this year foal with pretty much NO bag whatsoever. Just “flaps” of skin hanging there. She was very overdue, and had not been on any fescue.

She JUST started getting a tiny bit of a bag a few hours before she foaled (and at that time, we had no idea if she was even close to foaling or not). At the 11pm check she had just a little puffiness. Then, by the time she foaled, which I think was in the 4am range, she had a decent bag. It was very odd, and something I have never experienced before. She also was 39 days past her due date (for MANY years we’ve consistently had mares foal 1-3 weeks ahead of 340 days), which was very strange for us. She was a maiden mare, and I’m very curious to see what she does this coming spring.

The foal was healthy and normal – he just had a very, very long mane, which I presume kept growing while the rest of him hung in limbo for the extra 39 days!!

That makes me feel a little better. There is a difference in her bags from 1am until this morning at 8am. Are you considering your mares due date at 340 days? So that made her go 379?! I sold a mare that went 370 days and the owner kept asking if I had the breed date right. My hano mare waxed up for 2 weeks before she foaled. But never had one go without milk like this. Usually their bags get huge 2 weeks prior to foaling.

My mare foaled without a bag in '09. I actually took photos of her the day before her due date - empty milk shack. She foaled the next morning and had a little bag, but nothing like what I’m used to seeing. When the vet came out to check on everything he told its not the size of the milk shack that matters, but that the baby is drinking everytime they nurse. Well he was right, the filly had plently to drink. Apparently my mare was more like an automatic waterer (little bowl that keeps on filling) vs a water tub.

Still no milk and no foal. As I let her out this morning I noticed she had a clear discharge out of her vulva. Hopefully soon.

I squeezed her teat last night and there was a lot of clear fluid that came out. This must be a good sign right? She is maybe one of those automatic waterers like stripes’ horse.

I sware she has gotten so huge these past few days. You can tell the foal is moving back.

Here she is back in August. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/arcticcielo/Broodmares/Kali.png

Sounds like you are making progress. My guess is (as unwelcome as this is) that she still has a ways to go. Most of them do end up making a bag like normal!!

370 days would put her at/around Nov 8th. She just worries me because she is waxing up. I will keep updating if anything changes.

not meaning to hijack-- may I ask why you bred a mare so late last year?? your mare just getting ready now would mean you bred Nov/Dec last year, correct?

I’m honestly asking with politeness–I’ve always understood that past July/Aug would be considered too late.

and just for general knowledge gathering on my part, did you have to do anything special to get her in foal that late in the year?

She was a hard mare to get in foal, and I really didn’t think she would take. I bred her back in June or July with no luck. She was turned out with my stallion through November to keep him company. I tried the stallion with my gelding and the gelding jumped the fence  Stallion and gelding got along ok but the gelding wanted nothing to do with him I guess. So he went out with the mare in September. We kept checking her and nothing. I didn’t think she would take that late in the year but she ended up cycling on her own and got in foal.

My vet told me you can’t breed horses after June 21st because they don’t cycle after that. Of course I don’t believe that one bit. So breeding after July/August is late, but not too late unless you have a specific reason. It is too late for breeding tbs to race. Ideally you want the foals born early in the year, because now my foal will be 10 months behind some other foals. And when those other foals are turning a year on January 1, 2013, my foal will only be a few months old but still be considered in her yearling year. I plan on keeping the foal until it is atleast going under saddle, so by that time it will be caught up in size with the rest of the group.

We did nothing special, just turned her out with him. She was showing like she was cycling in the spring and had her checked again, but she was still preggers. It’s not really an “oops” breeding since I did turn her out with him.

I am a pony breeder. We have some in the Spring and if I want to we do some in the Fall. I love the Fall babies. Here in Florida it is just starting to cool off and makes it really nice to deal with the foals.

To hear a Vet say mares don’t cycle after June is amazing. My mares (at least some of them) cycle all year round and that is why I have had so many late year babies born (by my choice). BTW, we do not live cover, just do AI.

“don’t cycle after June” LOL, hard to believe a VET would actually say something like that!

thanks for the answer, good luck with your foaling! one good thing about it being late in the year is you won’t have to deal with the bugs and heat and a baby!

She is getting milk bags now. What a relief, I knew I was just worrying too much. This mare knows what she is doing lol.

GOOD!!!

Oh good! Really glad to hear that!!!

She finally foaled on Wednesday around 2pm. She had a large filly, healthy and fuzzy. Still not sure if she is going to be chestnut or palomino. She is even lighter colored today. The mare has lots of milk and the filly was nursing right away. All is good. Link to pic below,

Lovely! Congratulations on a healthy foal and plenty of milk. Have to ask – what is the pedigree?

Very cute foal. Glad everything went fine with the mare too.
