My mare has had some vagina discharge for the last few days, is this normal or should I have my vet out? Its not like when mares are in heat an they squat and pee, she’s just standing around and will lift her tail and slimy fluid with come out.
She’s got a bacterial infection. Pretty common, easily cleared with a lavage and antibiotics. A douche and a shot with more shots or pills for a week to ten days depending on severity.
Vet will probably want to do a rectal or vaginal exam and a swab but it’s a 20 minute service and not expensive.
PLEASE do this ASAP. Untreated, like any infection, it can spread and compromise the over all health of the mare running up a much bigger vet bill treating a more involved infection.
If this happens repeatedly, vet can do a Caslicks on her, also pretty easy and inexpensive, just light sedation, a local and stitches.
