Has anyone heard of this and does it work? I have a friend who has spent a fortune on trying to rehab her lame horse (he does not have EPM). He is only four and she is now being told he is at best serviceably sound. An old horse trainer told her to use EPM meds and that it has worked for him. Her horse’s lameness is in his hoof; bursa, tendon. Doing a little research before asking the vet and getting that “are you crazy” look. Thanks
Did the trainer specifically say Marquis/ponazuril? I am not a vet, but can’t imagine this would help with a hoof related lameness.
That said - some of the other treatments that were used like bute, steroids, DMSO, etc. could possibly help a tendon or navicular bursa issue because they reduce inflammation?
If horse has been diagnosed with specific hoof, tendon and bursa issues, does not make sense treating for parasites and Marquis is not cheap or without side effects.
That trainers horse may have had EPM, even today its not cheap or easy to positively confirm an EPM diagnosis so count me skeptical…
