Martingale stops

If you have leather martingale stops on reins, can you leave them on without the martingale in the show ring?

My favorite pair of reins has them, I don’t use a martingale often, but I don’t want to remove them just in case.

As far as I can tell, you would have to unstitch to get them off. If that is not correct, I would appreciate knowing how to get them on & off

It’s fine to leave them on.

It wouldn’t bother me at an unrated show. If rated, I would get another pair of plain reins to show in.

You should be able to slide them off over the bite/end that buckle.

If you’re doing the hunters I’d probably get another pair of reins or take those stoppers off and get yourself a pair that can easily slide on/off when needed.

If you want your horse to be properly turned out in the show ring I wouldn’t leave them on. Martingale stops are quite noticeable without a martingale.

Are they leather?

Rubber ones can be removed, but leather ones have to be cut off. I would not leave them on the reins if showing recognized, but they shouldn’t make a difference at the schooling show level.

If you are showing at a local show, I think it is okay to leave the martingale stops on. However, for rated showing, or even for a more competitive unrated show, I would consider either removing the stops or using a different pair of reins.
