Mary Kate Olsen at WEF

Has this subject not come up yet?

The driving reins? I think the subject has been beaten to death on other social media platforms…

She can actually ride well and has for a long time.

I don’t know about here, but I know there were several posts on Instagram where people were bashing her for every tiny thing. They were all photos though, not videos, and it’s very difficult to judge someones abilities from a stagnant photo. Haven’t seen a video nor do I have the desire to look one up.

It just isn’t news. She’s been showing at the big shows for a while, seems to keep a low profile, doesn’t cause any drama (as far as I know), seems to do as good a job as any of the other adult amateurs…what is there to discuss?

She’s a good rider. She hangs out at the rings when she’s not riding. You’d probably not even recognize her if you walked right past her. shrug

Don’t even think I knew she rode. Why is this news? Did she do something controversial ?

P.

I just pulled up and watched a couple videos from WEF… She looks like a amateur rider having fun out there. What in the world are people ripping on her for?

This was on one of the groups on Facebook too. People were bashing pictures of her from the Hampton Classic and saying she’ll never go to the Olympics riding “like that” and other nasty things. I set them down and said that if she wanted to go to the Olympics then she has the financial means for the best horses and trainers to compete in the rated classes and travel around Europe but she’s clearly happy showing the local hunters and lower jumper classes.

Now I have heard that she’s been rude to show employees and other competitors but that could just be TMZ type rumor that plagues all celebrities. “Rude” probably means “quiet and keeps to herself.”

Oh, this, definitely. I will forever be one of those rude types.

I’m glad she’s still riding. We rode at the same barn when I was young and I remember her pony pulling some stunts. I didn’t know she was riding again now, I’m glad to see it.

I didn’t know she rode, and all I can think of is the scene of her (or her sister) horseback in It Takes Two where one of the adults in the scene talks about her character being an equestrian, and she’s struggling along at the working trot jolting and manages to stammer out, “Are you asking me a question?”

If it was she in that scene and not Ashley, I’m glad to hear that by all reports she’s more comfortable on a horse than she appeared there. I loved that movie as a kid.

Mary Kate has ridden since she was very small. There were a lot of horse centered stories in the entire Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen franchise. It was a part of her character in Full House as well. It was a combination of my mother telling me stories of her riding and watching and reading the Olsen horse things that got me interested in horses

Not that I follow her at all, but that is one of the few scenes I seem to remember from the movie. I think it was the non-riding twin that was on the horse, and the rich twin was off with the mother.

The driving rein photo made the rounds on several fb groups with the resulting nasty armchair quarterbacking. She rides fine for an ammy, and in fact, much better than many of her detractors (but isn’t that often the case?). Frankly, I’ve grown tired of people bashing riders just because they’re famous in some other arena and are therefore expected to ride like Olympians for no other reason than, “they’re rich and famous.”

Can we file this under who gives a rat’s ass?

What division is she in? Does she use her own name? I would probably not recognize her.

She rides in the A/A jumpers. Has some very nice horses. She does not make a scene at shows and keeps a low profile. She is quite competitive and shows at a level that is safe for her and her horses. She has excellent coaching and has improved a lot over the past year or so.

As an aside, driving reins are an excellent tool for riders at all levels.

What are driving reins? Other than being curious about that, I am in the “leave her alone and let her show her horses like everyone else” camp on this subject.

These are the pictures that came out. People were also ragging that she had the watch and rings and bracelets on. Who carrrrrres. I was told she went around looking great–and hey, jumps higher than me! I had conversation about the driving reins with my trainer. Its very interesting and not necessarily easy to do.

Classic equitation book Form Over Fences (great book BTW) has at least one rider using the “driving rein” method to help her hands. So I guess if it works for you, good.
