The favourite finished fourth. My pick came in third.
I watched it later in the day. All the men looked so nice in their tails and top hot, and the Queen always looks wonderful. Is that typical dress code for Epsom or was it just because it was the Derby? I think they mentioned that the Queen has only missed attending twice in all her years on the throne.
Typical dress for the Derby if you are in the expensive/serious side of the course. The infield is traditionally a totally different vibe as the Derby is a day out of London. In the 19th century Derby Day used to be about as near to a riot as possible without actually rioting but, rather sadly perhaps, whilst still a huge crowd, it is now much tamer.
The Queen apparently plans her engagements to ensure she is there each year.
Why “rather sadly perhaps”? Honest question; I’m not being snarky. I’m just interested, because I like the “tameness” of the Derby racegoers compared to the Kentucky Derby, but from watching on TV the past several years I realize not everyone feels as I do.
The Derby used to be a such big event that London emptied and little serious work was done. Now, while racing remains hugely popular in the UK, the nation no longer comes to a standstill and the Derby infield no longer fills the entire Downs. That is my ’ rather sad’ since all of life was there.
