100 thoroughbreds moved into rescues/fosters across the state.
In the closed Virginians for Animal Welfare FB group (same folks that busted the Peaceable Farm situation), some feel the address of the seizure (2300 block of Quicksburg Road in Mount Jackson) may have billed itself as an OTTB retirement service and that maybe unsuspecting breeders/trainers may have placed horses there? It is an overwhelming situation due to amount and urgency. And the county itself is rural with small ACO staff. If you know of a prior owner who is trying to locate their animal, please reply and we will see what can be done to help.
From what has been posted by rescues, most appear to young. Several 2 year old stallions and a TON of mares. I’m guessing she is a breeder/hoarder. It has also been mentioned she has other farms and is breeding Pasos.
I’m so sick of fraudulent or incapable “rescues.” They give all rescues a bad name.
I am curious to learn more about this situation as details unfold.
ETA: just saw your extra info @GPjumper. Equally sick of breeder-hoarders.
From the photos and details posted, most appear to be young. I’ve seen one or two posted in their teens. Im not sure if they have checked for microchips. A friend in rescue said Shenandoah County was the best county this could have happened in. Apparently the Sargent ACO is a horse person and one of the best ACOs in the state. She couldn’t give details but just posted that the rescue community came together to find placements for all very quickly and was impressed by how they all came together to make this happen and how the rescues are all supporting one another.
Good to hear about the ACO in Shenandoah Co; and our FB group suspected there were other farm locations involved yet to be investigated. I will pass this info on, since they are mobilizing boots on the ground to participate in the investigation.
If it matters, Shenandoah Valley has had less rain than any other part of Virginia lately. Our grass here is beige and dry.
If these horses were on pasture, coming off of winter and not having much grass, that could have been an additional problem.
ETA:. We had a thunderstorm recently, so the grass is beige and damp, although there was enough rain to fill the birdbath enough that it’s spurting a bit.
I’m sure the ACs know about the other locations if there are any. Please let them do their jobs and don’t interfere. They may be getting warrants or planning something there that we are not privy to.
Considering the conditions of the horses posted. I’m not sure there would have been pasture even if has rained…….
No interference intended! We are a reputable advocacy group and know what we are doing It would be great if we can get support for the central Virginia rescue organizations, Hope’s Legacy and Central Virginia Horse rescue to name a few. https://www.hopeslegacy.com/ and https://centralvahorserescue.org/
Thanks for your support.
I hope so because it sounds like a bunch of locals trying to remain relevant in something they don’t belong in.
EARS has posted a full list of the rescues/LE agencies who took horses.
