What do you recommend for wash stall mats? We have unbrushed concrete and I was thinking of getting those interlocking drainage mats from Farmtek, but didn’t want to spend the money on shipping only to hate them. We are currently using stall mats and they never dry … Pulled them up and there is mold growing!
we use regular stall mats and we don’t have a problem. I think the key is drainage + tightly fitted mats. The water runs through the main seam between the mats right into the drain, as the floor is sloped towards the drain in the back. We pull the mats out every summer and pressure wash underneath them as we pressure wash the whole barn, but no mold issues yet.
Agree with above. Stay away from those mats with the drainage holes. THey clog up quickly and have to be moved and washed. ugly job…
Every time I’ve seen people put the mats with holes in them in a wash rack, they get replaced pretty quickly as (like posted above), the holes just get gunk in them and you have to pull the mats to clean up – way too much of a pain. I have just regular stall mats in mine, which work just fine. The only thing I don’t like is you still can get some gunk in the seams, and that can work its way under the mats, which creates a bigger gap so more muck gets in…eventually need to pull them up and wash underneath, but that is more of a once in a while chore. I am thinking of getting the interlocking type to prevent that, but haven’t gotten around to it.
The mats with the holes do clog up pretty quickly (mud from hooves, horse poop, dust, hair). However, they are lightweight so pulling them to clean/scrape really isn’t that bad. I do mine a few times a year when they stop draining so well. I have a solid mat under the front feet because 1 of mine paws in the crossties when left unattended, and then it’s also easy to sweep the front 1/3rd of the wash stall.
I don’t know how well it is going to work, it is still on order, but I ordered one from Humane Mats that is in one piece. They have better traction than the regular stall mats too, supposedly.

It was a bit more expensive than the 4 by 6 TSC ones but not that much and I really wanted more traction as I find the TSC ones slippery when wet. And I am putting it over crushed stone so I didn’t want the ones with holes because I knew those would fill up very fast.
