Mattes pad size

I placed an order for a custom mattes pad with equestrian products. It didn’t ask for pad size, just saddle size so I selected 17.5-18. After my order was confirmed I noticed that I ordered a large. I have a mattes 1/2 pad that is a medium that fits my saddle perfectly. The one I ordered is a build your own and I selected the shaped pad with the lined part under the saddle. I plan on using this one for shows.

So here is my question (finally) should I change the size to medium? I’m not sure what to do here, it’s expensive and I won’t be able to return it if it doesn’t fit.

Are we talking half pads? Mattes recommends large for a 17.5 saddle. By and large, most people use a medium. I use a mediums under a 17.5 saddle. I prefer less pad showing. I think most people do. The common size is medium. If you have a medium and like that under your saddle, I’d go with a medium.

I have a large and use it with both an 18" and 17.5" saddle. I like it.

The 1/2 pad I have is a medium, I ordered a full pad but with only the saddle part lined.

I would assume the pad size should still be the same and I’d want a medium?

I don’t think I want it to stick out more than this one does (the medium).

I think their sizing recommendation is bit generous (I have a medium mattes for a 17" saddle - it’s slightly big) but customer service people have told me that it’s in anticipation of shrinkage that occurs from washing.

I just washed the medium, I’ll try it on tonight and see how it fits, thanks.

I always washed mine in cold water with MELP and didn’t really notice any shrinkage?!

Yeah - I have never really noted any appreciable shrinking either but that’s what they told me… Maybe in Germany washing them in blazing hot water and putting in the dryer is all the rage

That’s how I wash mine, no shrinkage either. I have a size Large Mattes half pad that fit my 17.5 CWD beautifully.

okay, mine didn’t shrink either. I wrote to the company about my dilemma but I have not heard back.

I’d change the order to a medium.

I have a very forward 18’’ and a large Mattes quilt, and this is what it looks like. You can see that I have quite a bit of pad in front of the saddle. I have not washed it, but I bought it used and have no idea if it was washed before. I have to pull the pad forward because I hate when the a half pad hangs over the back of the regular pad.

I would get a large. It will shrink slightly after a few washes (even with melp and gentle/delicate cycle). From my experience at least.

I have a medium and a large and prefer the large, especially for my jump saddle. I can make the medium work, but it is a tight squeeze.
