Maybe this is a dumb question.... Re leather sizing.

With 32" inseam. What size leathers should I get? Santa needs to know. I’m thinking 63" ?

How tall are you? 63’’ is for a tall person usually over 6ft. Can you measure your current leathers? Women usually go for 58’’ or so, maybe a bit more if your instructor or someone tall will also use them .

My inseam is 30" and 60" are WAY too long for me, but I’ve found my leg conformation lends itself to shorter-than-expected stirrup length.

length of inseam to ankle x 2 , plus 4-6 inches is the usual rule of thumb

you have a pretty long inseam by your posted measure. Did you measure to the point of ankle or the floor? Measure to point of ankle. Perhaps have a friend help, it is hard to accurately measure self.

Do you have leathers now, or ones you use on a saddle you like? I would double check their length.

Otherwise you need at least 63 inches by your measure. Remember the length has some offset by the height of your stirrups

What size do you use now, and do you like them? I have a 34-35" inseam and usually ride with 54" leathers; I don’ t think I’ve ever had them longer than hole #5. (Maybe #4 once?) Longer can be better if you really like that tucked-in-the-keeper look for the end of the leather; I like them easier to adjust.

Your best bet is to measure the leathers you are currently using. Other than that use hoopoe’s method of measuring and estimating.

I think there must be variation on where the holes are placed in the leathers or I guess just how long people like their stirrups. The leathers on my dressage saddle are 60" and work fine, I could get away with 58" as well. I have 54" leathers on my jump saddle and I’d have to be on the bottom few holes to get them anywhere near my dressage length. For reference, I’m only 5’6".

My inseam is 33 and 60" leathers work well

The leathers that I currently have are too short (after the buckle fastens, they have about 7" which just hangs down. The worst thing is that (Egads). They are brown on a black saddle!!! Oh the horror. So I guess, I could go out with a tape measure and see what would fit current stirrup length + extra enough to fit in the keeper.

Mine leathers are 63" (160 cm). I’m 5’8" and my inseam is 33 inches.

Well if anything I suppose it’s better to get too long vs too short? I think I will get out a tape measure and see what seems right.

Can’t go wrong if they are a little longer than you need. What if some tall person wants to ride your horse?

Edward Gal, for instance.
