MDC Ultimate Stirrups

Looking for reviews and experiences please! I currently ride in the Tech Athena Jumper stirrups but have been struggling with ankle pain. It also feels like the stirrup itself rotates too far to the inside, making it hard to keep my foot in place and the weight down through the ball of my foot and into my heel.

Is the adjustability of the MDCs helpful?

I love mine. I have had ankle issues (one broken pretty badly) and use these because of the angle feature. I keep them at the 45º angle. They seem to help me.

Love mine.

I have the old school Herm Sprenger’s and the MDC Ultimates.

I have two knee replacements and an ankle patched together with screws, wire and bone grafts.

The Herm Sprengers are good for easing fatigue and general joint pain.

The reason I got the MDC Ultimates in particular/in addition is that I have difficulty turning my toe in on my injured right ankle, which makes it hard for me to catch my offside stirrup. I was either fumbling, or using my stick to help hold the stirrup out so I could catch it. I realized this was really a safety issue, both at mounting and it I ever lost the stirrup while riding. If I remember to position the MDCs (90 degrees for me) before I mount, the stirrup is right there when I swing a leg over.

I will forget and not think it matters, and then I’ll ride in tack with a plain Fillis stirrup and be in agony after 45 minutes.

I had these for a while and liked them okay. Big note (especially as I believe the Tech stirrups are a lighter weight metal) is that they are HEAVY. By far and away the heaviest stirrups I’ve ever had/ used/ seen. They are stainless steel, IIRC, and just have more to them with the joints and twisty top than other stirrups. I feel like they helped my joint and back pain to some degree. I ended up replacing them with my FreeJumps (that I absolutely love) after finding that they had me toeing out more than I already did and I was having issues with my heels being jammed way far down, both of which resolved with the FreeJumps. Tried to attach pictures that show what I mean but realized I have a crap selection of pictures :woman_facepalming:

Thank you! I’ve heard that they’re heavy. That might be my main reservation at this point. I toe in too much and have a disability that causes intermittent muscle weakness and spasm, so my ankle is prone to buckling to the outside when that happens. Having a stirrup that encourages my toe out and takes some pressure off the outside of my calf/ankle might be an advantage.

Might put out feelers to see if anyone has a pair I can borrow before I spring for a pair.

Where are you located?

I’m in NWNY. I think I’m set though. Mentioned it off hand to my trainer and turns out those are actually the same stirrups she uses. I have permission to snag them off her saddle for the weekend and a lead on a used pair to purchase if I like them.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Much appreciated.

Perfect!! Good luck.

LOVE mine. Not sure which style, but they have the thing at the to to adjust the angle. They absorb so much and help my old ankles a bunch!
