Measuring sticks: where did you get yours?

I’ve rediscovered how much I hate using measuring tapes (even harder with babies with short attention spans) so am finally looking to invest in a stick. I checked smartpak and the reviews on it are hit or miss. Has anyone purchased one from them and have insight on this? Or any other places you’ve picked one up that you’d recommend?

Thanks!

Valley vet has the aluminum ones:

Looks like they are on sale right now.

I bought mine from Valley Vet many years ago. Basically they last forever. I guess you could wear one out from over use, but I have never seen that happen. I find it very handy to have around.

It appears to be the same one as offered by SmartPak, but cheaper. There is not lots of choice in these sticks, so I would buy the one on sale.

we had the doorway marked similar to the markings on a convenience store doorway that is used to record the height of the robbers leaving/entering the store. This would give us a pretty close approximation the of the “current” height of young stock

I bought a “livestock cane” a few decades ago and it has a height measuring “stick” in the shaft of the cane. Looks just like this: https://www.amazon.com/Fashioned-Horse-Measuring-Walking-Stick/dp/B0078SC7J4/ref=asc_df_B0078SC7J4/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309722106657&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12462741685552838233&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013375&hvtargid=pla-623997339244&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=60862488719&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=309722106657&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12462741685552838233&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013375&hvtargid=pla-623997339244

Maybe not as accurate as a dedicated stick, but close enough for government work and useful for other things (like moving steers or helping you out with mobility in the event the ground ever rises up and smites you  ).

G.

We have several of the aluminum ones, have one of those canes.
It is not very accurate and hard to handle to see if you are level.

Then we have an old wooden measuring stick the AQHA used to give to breeders when they inspected your horses to be approved for registry.
They used to do that when the registry started.
That one is in the house, not in the barn and not in use but to measure … people.
I am 14.2 hands, yep, that short.
It is fun to take it out and measure guests, while talking about old times and horses and their people.

I do say that the OP really would be better served with today’s aluminum one, unless she needs to hit wayward steers with it, of course.

 I mean, life works in strange and unpredictable ways…but no wayward steers in my foreseeable future, as far as I know.

Thank you for the insight, everyone!
