Meclofenamate Sodium Side Effects?

My 18 year old gelding was diagnosed with a bruised sole Friday. The vet placed him on meclofenamate sodium for 5 days, 2x/day in lieu of his usual equioxx. He prefers this medication for feet in situations like this.

Two doses in, he’s fairly dehydrated based on urine color and a checking his gums… (though has has a normal amount of water during the day). Under saddle, walking, was rather sluggish and wobbly. We made a lap and promptly returned to the barn…

Vet has been contacted. We’ve pulled him off the meclofenamate sodium and will see if dehydration improves with electrolytes. If no improvement in dehydration and wobbles, bloodwork will be next step.

Has anyone else seen a reaction like this? My vet had not, but obviously NSAIDs can affect kidneys…

it usually takes the drug a few days to show on target effects. Side effects are usually bowel issues, like with aspirin or bute; ulcer colic. You may be dealing with worsening symptoms that looked like a pain / sensory issue = feet pain when you have something more progressing. Temp check is easy to do, I would start there. I , personally would probably not take wait and see. . Darker urine might be tying up sign

Thanks for chiming in! I agree, seems awfully fast to be related to the meclofenamate - but there have been no other changes besides the weather fluctuating. Could definitely just be a coincidence that it occurred the day after starting a new drug. I only mention the bruised sole because that was why meclofenamate was prescribed, but it’s a fairly minor bruise now - he’s had the last 2 weeks off as a precaution prior to the vet coming out, but has been cleared for flat work on soft surfaces.

Temp was normal Sunday. Wobbles seemed to be gone when under saddle. Dizziness of loss of balance never presented on the ground previously, just didn’t seem comfortable carrying me Saturday.
Good water intake Sunday and urine a more normal, though still quite yellow color.
Will continue to monitor and call vet for bloodwork if he isn’t noticeably more hydrated after work today (Mon). All NSAIDs have been suspended until I can make sure he is hydrated and back to normal.
