Meet Matilda! Pictures 10/1

My horse is IR and was obese when I got him, but through diet and thyroid supplements, he’s where he should be. A few months age he was looking a little ribby. I ran into the exact same issue: low starch feeds are always made for easy keepers.

I settled on beet pulp. It’s not a sweet feed. The special treats made for IR horses are made from beet pulp. Plus it’s cheaper.

Chewy has some varieties. Worth a look?

@moonlitoaksranch have you viewed the videos on the You Tube channel for Idaho Horseshoeing School. Some of them are quite something. It is hard to reconcile the condition of some of the horses coming in, but at least they are finally getting care. I like when they explain the concept and reasons for trims and shoe constructions. They mention , on occasion , the presence of vet and radiology capability. I have learned so much. The region is fortunate to have this resource

I thought you mentioned Triple Crown Senior upthread, and was not sure if you were aware that Triple Crown Senior is fairly low starch and very comparable to Triple Crown Low Starch as far as NSC numbers run. Their Senior Active + is even lower NSC than their regular Senior. Both would be great options!

Here is a link to Triple Crown’s NSC chart for their products, and I would highly encourage you to call Triple Crown with any questions. They have some of the best customer service out there!

Thank you! Yes, we realized that and we’re just going to keep her on TC Senior until she’s proper weight. Works fine because our Cushing pony need a complete feed (bad teeth) and low starch.

What thyroid supplement did you use? I have a chubby IR pony and am working on getting her more healthy.

It’s Thyro-L. You need a prescription, but I order from Valley Vet and they will call your vet for the Rx.

Tomorrow’s X-ray day! It’ll be a short drive and my trailer has very open sides, but wow, 90s expected at appointment time.

Just for you. Maggie pony in Barbie pink with her new sneakers. She was sore after her trim, so she’s got some shoes while her front feet grow out a little.

Has she bought her movie tickets yet? :joy:

I hope you get some insightful information from the xrays.

The trailer ride should create some breezes with all that ventilation.

OMG… that’s my childhood dream pony. She is beyond adorable!

I know! As a little kid, I would’ve battled a pack of rabid raccoons for a Maggie. :joy:

She is a perfect little thing with just a little white star as her only marking. She was our niece’s pony but there was a divorce and Maggie needed a new home so we took her in when she was 9 and our niece was 6. Once our niece outgrew Maggie, she gave her to our son, who was 4 at the time. Best Christmas ever for him. Our niece was 12 at the time and made us promise we’d never sell Maggie. She’s got a good heart. She’s finishing up college and I sent her that photo. I knew it would make her happy. When she visits, she gets pony time. Maggie is 25 now, so I’m not sure they’ll be another kid riding her unless our niece decides to start a family soon.

We just brought the horses in after some evening pasture time. Matilda galloped to the gate! She looked good. Also, her boy is not allowed to get any other horse out of the pasture before her. She blocked him from getting Maggie first. She doesn’t care if I do it, but no, that’s HER boy.

Update!

Left front has ringbone. Management with trimming and anti-inflammatories. Equiox and BL are on our list. Maybe joint injections.

Right front has 10 degree rotation. Manage with trimming. Prevent future laminitis.

She was very good for her X-rays. No sedation needed. She has more fans now, lol.

She has a good prognosis for light trail riding.

Here’s the good girl at the vet.

Sounds like you have more information now and a plan for maintenance. Equiox helps a lot of horses with their overall level of comfort. And it seems like you already have a great farrier, so that’s another positive note.

Matilda has such a pretty face and such a sweet expression. She was in such a strange place and yet she behaved beautifully. That’s more insight into her character. What a good girl!
