My grey has just been diagnosed as having a melanoma on her lip/corner of her mouth which apparently needs to be operated on. Has anyone had a melanoma in this location operated on? How was the recovery?
Our then 8 year old bay feral horse came up with some bumps on the edge of his lip, where the bit sits and up his face about 8", maybe five marble sized bumps.
It was rare on a bay, but when our vet took them out and sent them to the lab, it was a very aggressive type of melanoma and they said it probably would be back in weeks.
Well, not one came back and he lived to an old age before his bad knees got too bad to hold him up.
Is important that the vet gets it all out asap, to give the horse a chance, is what they told us and I guess our vet did.
If you are in doubt, have your vet consult with a veterinary oncologist, if they are not already doing so?
The plan is to take her to the university clinic in Belgium to get it removed, there they will be able to deal with if it is something very scary or not.
