Melbourne Cup 2014- starts in an hour!

Best race in the world starts in an hour ! So sad that I am no longer in the Oz to watch it but still exciting. The farm ( my 2nd home) where I spent 5 years has one that they bred, Fawkner.

Fawkner raced last year and came in 6th. Even fitter and racing better so big hopes for him this year. I helped prep him for the yearling sales in 2008. The whole family ( Dane Beltar - dam) are characters and goofy horses and run fast! Dane Beltar is one of my fave mares. Last years yearling filly sold for 650K - thanks to her big brothers being awesome.

Hope you got to see it. It was a good race. German bred, owned and trained Prefectionist won it.
Red Cadeaux was 2nd, for the third time.
Not sure where Fawkner finished, but he was prominent coming into the straight.

Also note that pre-race favorite Admire Rakti died shortly after being brought back to the stalls.
Araldo was also injured during after the race. “a young boy waved a white flag in the horse’s face. He leapt forward, jumping the steel rail, shattering a cannon bone in the process.”

Very very sad renewal. It’s not clear what happened to Admire Rakti yet but it is disturbing that the other horse apparently reacted to a flag intentionally waved in his face by a child.

Ended up not finding a live feed and fell asleep on the couch at only 8pm. So off to find some updates.

So sad about Admire and Araldo. THought I saw somewhere that there was some debate on Admire Rakti running before the race?

Wonder if that child is aware of the end result of his behavior? I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be cruel.
