Mementos? Putting horse down tomorrow/ A poem post 28

A friend is putting her horse down tomorrow, she has owned him since she was 11 and he 5, he is now in his 20’s and very ill. Prior to a computer crash, I had several sites saved that made different horsehair mementos. (like Susan Storms, ponylocks, cottage tails, etc)
I remember one in particular that made small bowls and things from horsehair (they fired it until it was basically like clay, really neat and unique).
Does anyone have any links to anyone who makes things from horsehair?

Hugs to your friend on that oh-so-hard day

Here’s another pottery place: http://www.claypony.com/

And these pots ARE clay  The horsehair is draped over the super hot (still being fired) clay piece and it burns, leaving the black marks.

I’m very sorry for your friend. Her decision, although the toughest she’ll make is the kindest. My heart goes out to her.

Thank you so much!

I bought one just last month in New Mexico from one of the local potters. (Navajo)

It is absolutely lovely, and what a wonderful way to remember a precious friend.

Jingles for tomorrow and HuGs too, I’m so sorry for you’re friend’s loss.

No ideas from me. I cut off all of Tim’s tail after we put him down yesterday, and plan to do something with it. Tell her I wish her the best and if she needs someone to commiserate with, I am here too.

BIG HUGS.

We used Ida: http://www.horsehairmemorypots.com/

She is fabulous and the pots are wonderful. I can’t say enough great things about her!

I have a pot from:

http://herwheel.com/

My SS from COTH got me that for XMAS a couple years ago. It is her mother who makes them! A lovely small pot with hair baked into the top. Gunnar was horse of a life time and now I have a momento to treasure forever!

Hugs to all involved!

When my horse had a pasture accident two months ago, the BO saved his tail for me.

I have braided and made some of the tail hair into a browband decoration (Where the crystals would go…). Here’s hoping my next horse will get just a smidgeon of Echo’s wonderful (and sadly missed) character.

The rest I will sent to TwistedTails for a bracelet. I had one done for a friend and it was lovely.

thanks everybody. My friend and I have discussed this a lot over the last week or so and it has not been an easy decision for her, but I think she is finally ready. But it is still never easy.
And condolences also to you too, Hokie, I was shocked when you told me about Tim.
But at least you were able to be with him.

I know someone who had a very tasteful bracelet done from her horse’s tail. It was a braid set into a flat leather bracelet. It has held up well to daily wear. Does anyone else know the link for them?

I’m so sorry for your friend and the others here who have lost their horses.

Jingles

I can certainly sympathize with you having been there twice in the last 18 months. First time in years that I have been horseless (I don’t count the SO’s mare as mine). I found this website and really liked it and want to see if they can something with both Cody’s tail and Spot’s together since Cody raised Spot and taught him everything he needed to know about toting me around XC…well almost everything. He forgot the important stuff about not running away when mom falls off.

Bring a carrot cake with you to share with him. Freebird had me do that when she helped me the day I put my Star mare down. We celebrated her life.

OMG I’m so sorry - I also had a small heartattack when I saw the title of your post as I thought it was one of yours (actually I was dreading it was Penny or her filly)…

I don’t have any sites or anything of that nature, but wanted to share my condolances and while it may be the right decision, it is not the easy decision as I so very recently found out myself. Hugs and jingles for all concerned tomorrow.

Make sure she wants it though.

I’m so sorry for your friend, that must be just heartbreaking for her.

A suggestion - make sure that she actually wants something from her horse. My friend had to have her old guy put down too. I was with her and when she went out to the car, and I went to pay, I asked the clinic to send me some of his tail so that I could get something made from it for her. The next day she started telling me about some website she was reading that people got momento’s made from their horse’s hair and how horrible that would be and she wanted her horse to stay “complete” after he had died etc etc. About a week later a large envelope arrived for me with the tail hair - which I still have and have never confessed to getting. I know a lot of people love them, just wanted to balance it out in case your friend feels like mine. I am SO relieved that I didn’t get her anything.

I definitely will. Unfortunately this is usually not something people think about at the time, so I don’t want her to regret later that she didn’t get his tail.
I’ll just get it and hang onto it until she decides what she wants, when she is ready.
I wanted to get the links though, she’s actually my trainer who I am glad to say has become a good friend, and one of her other students and I want to go in together on a memento for her.

OMG no Annissa, I’m sorry I didn’t even think about people i know seeing the thread. BUt thank you so much. penny isn’t getting any younger, and we just found out she has a sarcoid, so I know my day is coming. But thank God, it’s not tomorrow.

Hey, it is ok… I HATE it for your friend, but I will admit that I’m glad it isn’t Penny. I still think of you and me standing near a water tub at a show sitting on our girls while they played in the water waiting to go into the ring LOL. And I know that you feel about Penny the way I do about Cory… it wouldn’t be a pretty sight and I too DREAD the day.
