Mens Dress Boots

Trying to find mens riding stuff is bad at the best of times, especially when it comes to not emptying my pocket.

Just wondering if anyone has got any tips or other ideas for mens apparel, secifically at this point dress boots.

I see Vogel and Dehner’s as the main brands which are available at several tack shops in custom and stock, but these aren’t exactly the cheapest. Surely someone out there has some tips on some more affordably priced mens apparel?

(yep I do scour Ebay too without much luck)

Also, if you end up coming to Virginia for Virginia Hunt Week - considering coming a few days early and scouring the local tack stores. I know good quality mens dress boots can be found at Saddlery Liquidators - lots of them.

Call the Middleburg Tack Exchange and ask them what they have available in whatever size you need. They’ll be glad to look, take measurements, etc. 540-687-6608. They often have used Vogels, Dehners, Der-Daus, etc.

There’s a place in New York that also does mounted police boots - but I can’t remember the name.

It was Connecticut…http://www.fineboots.com/

I’ve heard that those posted above off e-bay really aren’t that fantastic, quality wise.

I would second SSR’s suggestion about Middleburg Tack Exchange. I picked up cutoms Vogel’s that fit my sister like a glove and were nearly brand new for $200.

Doesn’t Ariat also have a Men’s Dress boot??

You may also call The Surrey, in Potomac, MD. They have quite a selection of boots as well, though not quite as extensive as MTE.

Tallyho Equestrian

I suggest that you take a look at what Tallyho Equestrian has to offer. They make wonderful custom boots in several styles for just a fraction of the price of others. Their website is: www.gotallyho.com

I ordered a pair of their boots last year. They were delivered in 5 weeks, as promised, and I just love them.

My horse shoer (who also events and foxhunts) wears these:

The Mountain Horse Classic High Rider.

I know because I helped him pull them off last year. He lost one of his legs in a riding accident years ago and even with zip ups he doesn’t have enough ankle flexibility to get the boot off easily. We had quite the wrestling match, hope no one was watching.

Shouldn’t be a problem if you don’t have an artificial leg.

I hunt in the Mountain Horse Dress Boots as do several other members of the hunt.

You could try some Devon-Aire. If you take good care, they last a couple of years before the sole falls off or the calf wears through.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Part of the problem is that I have a tall leg and regular height boots look silly on me. You can get the extra height on ladies boots, but mens never seem to have the option - I’ve been very happy with the Mountain Horse footwear I’ve bought and would jump straight away on their tall boots if they did the extra height. The lack of extra height option on mens boots appears to be a problem with Ariats too.

Thanks for the idea of the MTE. Guess I never really thought about it, but I’m lucky enough that I should be able to organise a day trip there without too much expense/headaches, so certainly worth a phone call and a follow up visit if they’ve got anything worthwhile.

( www.gotallyho.com website appear to be down - unable to look at their boots )

Then may have better luck looking at the dress boots marketed for dressage riders.

I think the Dover catalogue may have a selection of mens dress boots that might work for you. I don’t have the catalogue handy this minute - but I’m pretty sure I saw some very tall dress boots in there (They caught my eye because I have the same problem with ladies boots - never tall enough)

If I find anything - I’ll post back. I’ve got lots of catalogues.

I’ve noticed that Dressage boots do seem to have a little more options, but as I’m looking for a pair of Dress boots for Hunting/Jumping won’t Dressage boots be too stiff? I’ve never owned dressage boots, but that’s what I’ve heard and so why I haven’t looked down that route.

I’ve never had that problem.
