My poor sweet mare who has been on Metformin for 1 week now due to acute laminitis has developed ulcers on the outside and inside of her mouth /lips/gums/tongue …does anyone know if the compounded version causes the same side effects?? Or if there’s another drug alternative ?? Her insulin was high so she probably needs it …I’ve put her on a strict low sugar diet and removed a lot of things with ingriedients that aren’t good for IR …she’s getting Thyro l , Insulin wise , Pentoxifylline , and Ace …
Call your vet now. Worst case scenario is that horse is experiencing an allergic reaction to something, and if horse continues to be exposed to it, it will progress to anaphylaxis.
Probably not what is happening, but you want to make sure. Call your vet now.
We’ve used Metformin extensively. There are some different compounds (if that is the correct terminology). One is extremely caustic. We would put vasoline or Aquafor on the mouth first to help w that. The other is not caustic at all and does not blister. I am very sorry I am not sure where the non caustic comes from but will try to find out for you. You could call Rood and Riddle pharmacy. Our vet uses them a lot. Metformin is a great drug-not sure why anyone still makes/markets the caustic version. (Personally, I’ve had better luck w Metabarol and Equinity than InsulinWise.).
It appears the non caustic brand of Metformin is from Ascend.

((hugs)) for you ~
My vet was called right away …we’re stopping the Metformin for time being …she warned me to look out for this side effect and sure enough it’s happened …my mare is very sensitive…the brand I’m using is Heritage Pharmaceuticals 500 mg ?? Wedgewood also compounds it …wondering if that’s less caustic …we just switched to Insulin Wise from Metaboleeze so too soon to tell if any changes yet??
Dr Kellon from the ECIR group recommended Uckeles Glycocemic Eq …has anyone tried that ??
Yes, I tried it. My horse wouldn’t touch it.
Ugh …:that’s what I’m afraid of …she’s being picky as it is
