Millbrook leathers half chaps

Anybody have a pair? What’s the leather quality and how do they hold up? My Ariat half chaps just died after 6 years so I’m looking around for new ones. I love the Aroats but these caught my eye.

The Millbrooks are made nicely from a decent quality leather, but there is no extra layer on the inside calf. I haven’t worn a pair, but that missing detail tells me they’re not going to wear like a pair that does have that feature (if you ride a lot).

I love my half chaps although as Melissa said there is not extra layer of leather on the calf. I don’t expect them to last for years to come, but for $79, I didn’t expect that either way.

FYI I emailed to ask if they were doing another discount code anytime soon. The owner replied back almost immediately, but alas the answer was “no.” Bummer to have missed the pre-holiday sale!

The Ariat half chaps I’ve been using are the top end close contact. Even my Vogels are cut out for close contact.

I’ll research some more and then decide. I’ll have to get custom too.

Bumping this back into existence because I have a question about the Millbrook custom half chaps -

My Ariat Breeze half chaps do not allow for spurs to fit over the bottom so I can’t ride in spurs unless I wear my tall boots. Are the Millbroook half chaps cut out in a way that the spurs will fit over just my paddock boots instead of the bulk of both boot and half chap? Does that make sense?

Also, now that it has been a while, does anyone have more to review about durability? Both the inner calf’s leather and the zipper holding up?

I am close to needing a new pair as my Ariat’s are many years old, but I would like to avoid having the spur issue if possible.

Thanks!

I would have to wear a spur over the chaps and boot, the way mine fit me. Chap goes down low enough that it would cover a spur if the spur was not worn over the chap. Is that what you’re asking?

The durability is ok. About what you’d expect for the price. No one is going to mistake them for Tenney’s, you know. But they’re fine for what they are. I have had to have mine restitched once where the elastic meets the leather and will need to again-- but they have not worn through. I’ve had mine about a year.

One of the reasons I liked the Tredstep Deluxe leather half chaps was because my spurs fit so nicely over the half chaps. I always had a problem with the half chaps that had that strip of leather or suede closure that added bulk to the outside of the leg.

Bumping this back up - for those with Millbrook half chaps, do they rub at the back of your knee or drop at all? Trying to decide if I should give the full 18" measurement to the back of my knee or drop it by half an inch or so.

Any help would be appreciated!

Mine do not rub and did not drop. They did, however, start falling apart in under a year of regular but not heavy use. But again, they weren’t that expensive so I’m ok with that.

Chiming in here because this thread inspired me to take a chance on Millbrook’s half chaps and I so regret it.

Measured as they instructed, but - surprise! - they didn’t. Instead of measuring the height from the floor, as they direct you to do, they measure from the bottom of the leather to the top, as if there weren’t an elastic under your foot. I didn’t really want half chaps to cover my knees, guys.

Here’s their response, 10 days after I sent a picture with a ruler showing how wrong they’d made them:

“The resolution is that there are no returns and no refunds as stated and agreed to by you when you purchased them. IF the owner of the company determines that we made them to your specs then we are through. If she determines that the chaps were not made to your given measurements then we will re-make them. I have. Ot heard from her on this decision.”

Typos theirs. So yeah, caveat emptor. Terrible work; even worse customer service.

My customer service experience was also not entirely great. Sorry. Maybe you can resell them @Saskatoonian

I dealt with the owner of the business this past year and it was absolutely horrible. It wasn’t in regard to her leathers or chaps but I would never give her a cent of my money after my experience. My non horsey husband was livid at the experience he watched.
