"Millennial Grooms Are Ruining the Equestrian Industry"
I’m willing to be that the author was thought of lazy by more than one person during her tenure.
Indeed. Just watch a little bit of the videos below…

One more: here’s an old thread from 2010 about the CMT show, if this is the same Megan who is the Barn Manager on this. Looks like now in 2016 you can watch the show on YouTube.

Ooooh, it’s THAT gal? That’s all I needed to know for it all to make sense.

Embarrassed to say, yeah, I watched the show. She didn’t present herself any better on camera than she does on “paper”.

Ooooh. Those videos are painful.

Any credibility she may have had just went poof.

I’m hoping this is just a poorly-executed April Fool’s Day joke.

Wow, love the part in the video where she strolls in at 10:00am and the horses have not been fed yet. Yeah, she’s a keeper.

Sadly article is dated Dec.

Hm, my guess is that this may become a very long thread.
Train wreck! :applause:

If you have to stop and say to your reader that they are probably wondering what the point of the story is, you should know you haven’t done a good job of laying out your argument.
I have always said that it is up to the author of every story to TELL THE DANGED STORY.
This sort of article makes me so mad. Start paying people real wages in the horse industry, and you wil find good help. The smart, hardworking people leave the industry when they realize they can make way more money elsewhere, and keep the horses as a hobby. It’s not about being a spoiled millennial, it’s about making a smart choice so you can afford to feed yourself.
Yep!

The clips were painful enough…couldn’t watch the longer videos. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, TeeHee…FUNSTABLE!! Funny the ways in which people reinvent themselves. Thanks for the chuckle

I’m a millennial. I’ve also groomed professionally for some top jumpers and now manage a farm. I like the work.

Older generations complaining about the young’uns is a tale as old as time.

OMG is she still working with horses? I mean her incompetence and attitude were obvious in the show. No way I would let her near my horse.

Although I can see why she says millenia ls are ruining her job. The hard work they put in is making her look bad.

My thoughts exactly!!

She wouldn’t last 5 minutes on my farm.

This. It’s nothing new.
It seems like right now the cycle has sped up, so suddenly we Gen X/Y’ers are already demanding the millennials get off our lawn. IMO this just makes us look/feel old.

This woman is a moron, just based on her theatrics at that reality show.

Trust me hon, I saw lazy in the 80’s, entitled has a looong history.

This.

I hate these threads. The reality is there are lazy millennials, and there are hard working millennials, just like any other generation. I have a barn full of college employees who you would be proud to have at your barn.

If feels like “kids these days” can never win. If they stay at home into adulthood so they can work for free (or, in some cases, pay to work) then they get criticized. But if they demand enough money to pay for rent and other basics, they’re criticized.

Reality is, we need the millennials. I was just speaking to one of the major vets in our area who was saying we need more young adults interested in horses. The older women that kept the industry strong for a long time are downsizing or getting out of horses completely. He said, “we need more young people like you buying and training and breeding.” I responded, “but we can’t afford it.” He replied, “I know, and that’s a problem.”

It’s worrisome.

lol, yup and and only 1 day has passed

 1. the behaviour (whatever it may be) of a child is largely a result of their upbringing. So to yell and kick and scream at them is pointless because this is all they know. If you want to be mad at someone blame the person raising them. While you can’t blame ‘nurture’ for everything, being lazy and entitled are two things that you have to seocifically get away with.

 2. the whole “I was treated like crap and put in long hours and paid my dues therefore I will treat the next generation the same” is antiquated and draconian. Here’s a novel concept. Be a better leader and manager. INSPIRE the people who work for you to work hard and achieve success. People who feel like they can’t find good work should look first to how THEY manage. It will likely explain a lot.

 3. people should be fairly compensated for the work they do. People should not have to work for free. That’s exploitation. Just because it’s always been that way doesn’t mean it’s right. What’s wrong with striving to do better?

Nothing.

But where is the money to pay the workers going to come from?

Many barn owners are already subsidizing, to some extent or another, their boarders. They don’t factor in their own wages, or they don’t factor in things like property tax and putting in some % of money to cover maintenance and upgrades, etc. They are already on razor-thin margins.

And many of the people who are boarding are keeping horses on a shoestring. If board went up, you’d see a significant number of people sell and get out of the industry entirely.

It’s not like most barn owners are sitting on huge profit margins and refusing to pay the working students because it’s always been done that way. Other industries have gone through similar shifts away from free internships/apprenticeships… but they had the margins to do so. The equestrian industry? I’m not sure the economics are there in the vast majority of barns.
