So fun.
I’m still pissed about that derby- he blew my good wagers to bits. But man, what a wild story.
Also, the movie 50-1 was so bad that it was good and cemented him into my heart.
I played the race back remembering this story. $9500 yearling. The horse is so calm on a loose rein taking the long way to the Winner’s Circle. I read where he’s a trail horse in Roswell now.
Wonderful update. He is a great horse, I love his personality . There used to be a live cam in his stall and I got hooked on watching what he was up to.
Such a great situation, just to keep the possibility, the “hope” up for the little guy to be able to… every now and again… win against the big guys with all the money behind them. It’s necessary to keep that hope alive, that a good horse can be recognized by a skilled horseman, trained appropriately, treated well, by people who care about him, and overcome all the odds (even the odds at the tote board), and be a winner. Because if it’s never anything but the super rich playing this game, the game is over IMO.
He came in 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont.
He’s like the Funny Cide story - truck and trailered by trainer.
He was wonderful to watch race, zipping from behind. People forget he was champion 2yo, won the Derby, 2nd (to Rachel!) in the Preakness, 3rd in the Belmont (and I always wonder if he had started his run a bit later… ) and then a 4th in the West Virginia (I think that was it). He was a fun horse to follow.
I’d love to have him as my trail horse
