Mini Pig - A couple of fun video clips

I had previously inquired on here about getting a mini pig and I must say, most of the responses were not encouraging. Still, I remembered fondly the pink pig, Wilbur of course, my parents had for a while when I was a child who used to go sleep with my horse at night, and who was very sweet.

So perusing Craigslist the weekend before my birthday (late August), I ran across an ad for spotted mini pigs in my area for just $25. Of course they were practically feral/untouched, hence the price. For that price though, I was willing to give it a try so I asked to get a male as I knew a male would be easier to have neutered than a female would be to spay. So I brought Hamilton home in a cat carrier at 9 weeks of age.

And four months and much handling later, he is such a hoot! I’ve got to say that he has become quite the little entertaining and endearing beastie! Yes, at first, he was a pain, but twice daily handling, and neutering, made all the difference.

He sleeps with one of the barn cats, Otis and hangs out with my three shetland sheep wethers, but has the run of the barn area. And he goes on walkabouts with us along with the cats and the dogs, and probably the sheep would come along too if we let them. Might have to try that. Anyway, here are a couple of video clips.

Love the whole herd of critters going for a walk!!!

Thanks! It’s so ridiculous, it’s funny.

Cute! How big do mini pigs get?

Larger than you would think. He’s probably 40+ lbs now at 6 mos and they grow until they are 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if he winds up in the neighborhood of 100lbs, which is why I would never consider one for indoors. And I did this know that.

Supposedly there are micro pigs who stay in the 40-60 pound range or less, with careful feeding. Best I can tell, he’s a Julianna/Pot Belly cross. He only gets a cup of food twice a day and then whatever greens he forages for. Letting them get too obese is not a good thing, and they do run to fat easily. Allegedly his parents were in the 60 to 40 pound range. They gain 70% of their size in their first year.
