mini whine

I am restricted from the barn and horse activities until next Saturday because of the cataract surgery.

I had a fabulous lesson last Saturday. We found that if I hold the reins in my left hand it goes a long way towards straightening out my left twist. I need practice to get used to that and can’t for another week.

Can’t even go feed treats because of the dirty atmosphere.

I can see so much better now that it is totally worth it; but, having all this time on my hands makes me think LET’S GO RIDE!

I’m knitting a sweater and will probably get it finished by the end of my captivity.

End of whine.

Since you can’t practice with your reins in your left hand for a few days, try carrying your coffee, dog’s water dish, soup bowl or other “sloshy” items in your left hand. I did this and found it required quite a bit of focus but noticeably helped my hands while riding!

Thanks for the tip! Actually, I’m left handed but in a right handed world I do most things with my right hand. I was always told that in western you carry the reins in your less dominant hand.

The hardest part of the switch was collecting him for the lope…my ‘new’ hand didn’t quite get the feel of that.

A trainer once advised me to hang my bridle on the back of a chair and sit in another chair facing it and practice my rein handling. Lengthen, shorten, left, right, lengthen, shorten…

I like that. I’ll have Mr. Ez go get my bridle. Not only that, I’ll sit in my show saddle while I’m practicing and use my show bridle. It could also use a cleaning and polish. I’m getting excited now!

From experience re cataract surgery:

Wear goggles or close fitting surround type glasses when cleaning tack, washing dishes etc.

I wore my snorkel mask or shooting goggles. Eyes are nothing to mess around with. One flip of tack cleaner or reflexively brushing sweat off your face and - poof - yer screwed! Don’t ask, just take it as gospel truth. :frowning:

I’m being good…getting lots of knitting done! I did go to the barn today but just to watch Mr. Ez bring horses in. I stayed a good distance away. We’re had so much rain lately that I don’t think there’s a speck of dust to be had anywhere, outside.

It was good to see my boys again.
