minimum height for Dutch mare

I’m not too familiar with the Dutch regulations, and am wondering about height. I looked on the website but did not find a reference to height. Is there a minimum height for a mare to be approved for breeding? We have a very attractive, good moving mare on the farm that’s coming 3. But she’s only between 15.1 - 2 (155-158). She’s a dressage type.

Any advice on what we can expect at an inspection? Should we bother to have her looked at?

Thanks.

I believe the minimum height for studbook inspection is 15.3. However, I believe that if your mare already has Dutch foalbook papers, you can breed her (without having her inspected) to an approved dutch stallion and still get the same foalbook papers for the foal. The KPWN-NA office is extremely helpful if you have any questions.

Judy,
I have a Dutch foalbook filly who is 15.1H at age 3. I think she is really nice but she is small. I’ve debated on breeding her to a sportpony stallion or just breeding her to a regular jumper stallion because of her genetics.

Sally

According to the Procedures link under the Keuring tab, minimum 158 for Studbook, min 160 for star.

I have no knowledge if there is some finesse available if the mare is foalbook. Ask the NA office, they are very helpful.

Thanks, Forte and NHF. That’s exactly the information I was looking for. She is a foal book filly, so it’s interesting to know she can be bred w/o being presented.

Sally, her parents were 16. and 16.2. So I think I’d breed her to a tall stallion and hope for something quite a bit taller than she. If you breed your filly to a pony, I love to know about the offspring.

Having a mare in the studbook and maybe even with a Ster (possibly Keur) predicate does make a difference when selling foals produced by her.

I have seen the jury be somewhat generous in their measuring when dealing with a nice mare though…

For mares be inspected for studbook, the minimum is 158 or 15.2, and they can also get branded in the US (not in EU). (geldings minimum studbook is 15.3? I think). Mares must be 15.3 minimum for ster eligibility.

I also have four dutch horses genetically slated to be larger, but they turned out to be 14.2 -15.3. Three of the four have 16.3 fathers. One 15.2 mare is in studbook. Waiting to see where 15.2 3 yr old mare turns out. The little 14.2 gelding is 4 in march, feet size 0, so dont expect him to grow much.

My filly is coming 4 in May and is still 15.1. Can she make 15.2? Possibly, but it may take another couple years.

I would not go to the expense of an inspection if she is not securely 15.2. I don’t think 15.3 is in the cards.

Would love to know the breeding on these lovely little mares… and see pix too!

I haven’t put a stick on the lovely Dutch four year old I just bought, but I’m guessing 15.1-15.2. She is incredible but small. Breeding Facet/Vosmaer. I’d post pics but am tech challenged.

Wow! I’d take that one

It’s a pity the WB studbooks are basically leaving no options for the horses that are in between pony size and minimum horse size. There’s a growing market for small WBs. Not as good a market as for the big ones, but some older ahem rerider ahem women are coming to their senses about horse size.

ahem that would be me, proud owner of a 14.3 3/4 hands sport-bred Morgan mare

I put a baby photo on the top of my blog. This is Deusi by Ikoon out of my Dutch mare, Natasha.

a beautiful foal-love to see her all grown up. Well, like mine, as grown up (not) as she’s going to be

Put us ![](n that book. We have a Neptune/Pinshcallah coming 6 year old eeek. Both parents were 16hns and 16.2 with height in their background respectively and she topped out barefoot at 15.1 maybe 2 with some fat fluffy aluminums on.

She was the top hunter type 2 year old of the 07 keuring tour. and were were told she scored 8.5 for movment and 9.0 for conformation. They implored us to bring her back for studbook, and beyond inspections. We never have though because of her tiny dancer size!

She is lovely and had HUGE big horse movement and jumps very well. Just would not meet their height requirements to get better predicates like she really deserves.

Judy is that filly out of Nudel?

Your Dauphin mare is stunning. Congratulation.

My mare was 15h2 at 3.5 y.o and now she is almost 16h1 at 4.5 y.o. She is a bit too tall for my taste. I would have loved her to top at 15h3.

They can mature really slowly.

Yes, SPF, that’s a Nudel baby.
