My UL event horse was just diagnosed with a partial tear to her right miniscus. Does anyone here have experience with this injury, What the rehab process is like, and long term outcome?
I know there are others here who have dealt with meniscus tears so I hope they weigh in.
Anecdotally, you can certainly do injections to help with healing- specifically PRP, Prostride, or the hydrogels have also shown some benefit in meniscus tears. Rest is a key component of recovery. Wish I could help more. What did your vet recommend?
From personal experience, I highly recommend a hydrogel like Noltrex. My horse had a partial meniscus tear as well and he was not a surgical candidate at the time. He made a complete recovery with a very conservative rehab plan.
She’s having surgery. Not sure what that entails exactly…
Ah, arthroscopic surgery will entail a lengthy rest period I’m sure. Hopefully she will make a full recovery! Was there an incident where she injured it or a gradual issue that came on?
I really hope so too. I hope others can chime in on their experiences because I’m not feeling entirely optimistic.
I think it’s been very gradual. I’ve felt shes had difficulty in her medium trots pushing off the RH but she was never “unsound”.
While doing a lameness exam for a different leg and blocking that leg, the RH became legitimately lame which prompted blocking and more ultrasounding. Fun times
We had a gelding tear the meniscus in his stifle as a 5 yr old (9 years ago now). We sent him for surgery and he has stem cells injected a few weeks post op. Stall rest was difficult with this high energy horse…long story short we couldn’t do rehab after stall rest because he was too wild. I put him out in a field ( he was sound). Surgeon told me he had about a 50 percent chance of making it as a dressage horse. He’s had many accidents and issues since but went back to work a few years ago and did his first psg last year. If I were you I’d definitely do pro stride or stem cells or anicell post surgery and maybe again when you start back to work. Best of luck.
Thank you. Wonderful he was able to do PSG! How long did he have off until you could get back on?
