Minute markers: how are you locating?

Old fashioned wheel?

An app? if so, which one?

CrossCountry app just went up to $39.99/yr so I’m considering changing…

I used a wheel for a long time, until it finally broke. More recently I’ve used the Course Walk app and found it to be reasonably accurate (and free).

I HAVE a wheel, but I rarely use it.
I have an old Garmin GPS that I use both for measuring courses as a TD, and finding my minute marks as a competitor.
I don’t have a smart phone, so I don’t use any apps.

but there are no minute markers on the free one :confounded:

I use a free app called “Map My Walk by Under Armour.”

I’ll be honest, I read the thread topic and it vaulted me instantly back to '96 when we (Wofford students) would jump at the chance to be the one manning his big wheel and calling off the minutes.

Clearly I haven’t worried about minute markers in a long time as I didn’t even know that the Cross Country App had them.

I still think I would probably wheel them. But more for the nostalgia, dedication to doing it the way that ensures I did measure it myself… and come on… I AM a control freak. So not like I would enjoy just believing folks. LOL

Em

Minute markers?! I don’t need no stinkin minute markers!

Huh. I guess I haven’t used it in a couple years (older horse stepped down to dressage and the younger one isn’t competing yet). Maybe it changed. I’ve definitely done minute markers with it, and definitely was not paying an annual subscription and definitely didn’t pay that much for the app.

There is very little about combined driving that is less complicated than everyothersport, but this makes me super happy for our km markers!

I enjoy the cross country app. Not only for my own courses, but it gives me notifications for international courses as well I like to see.

For what it’s worth, I know some course designers are using an app to measure the courses. It’s not necessarily as accurate as a wheel, but time is money and nobody is paying them to wheel 6+ courses, that would take all day.

I was told by someone who’s compared results that the apps are reasonably accurate - less so over steep terrain.

If time is super important to you, take a wheel then compare it to the official measurement. You will have the edge on your fellow competitors.

CourseWalk app is free to mark your course and it auto does markers.

I should correct my reply: there are no minute markers in the free CrossCountry app. The CourseWalk app has them, but it’s not free. Its $14.99 and it was last updated 2 years ago.

Still, cheaper than CrossCountry at $39.99!

No sadly it’s $14.99 (or 9.99 for the older version) - there’s no free version

Can you tell me how you use this? I just downloaded it and tried it and it just gives a map with mileage. Are you converting the mileage to meters and then trying to trace along the map to find minute markers? I admit I’m very confused by how you might use this to find markers. Any help is appreciated!

oh I must have bought that and forgot :joy: Thanks for correcting.

You can change the units from miles to kilometers in the settings.

At the bottom of the screen, choose the little icon that looks like a timer then select “start workout” when you start walking your course. If I’m running Modified, at 490 mpm, I watch until the app says 0.490 km and I know that’s where I should be at 1 minute, 0.980 km is where I should be at 2 minutes, etc.

Aha! Brilliant- thanks!

How do you use minute markers in the CrossCountry app without knowing where the track was wheeled? Are you able to figure out the track wheeled from the map in the app?
