Misoprostol Paste

Hi, has anyone found misoprostol paste that’s more affordable, similar to Abler’s Omeprazole? I’ve hear great things about it for my gelding, but the pricing is similar to Ulcergard, etc. and I really need the paste as my gelding doesn’t response to the powder as well.

TIA!!

Where have you checked?

Wedgewood compounds a paste:

Most of the compounding pharmacies probably do.

Rood & Riddle or Wedgewood both compound a misoprostol oil suspension. I used it successfully on a horse with complex ulcer issues who also didn’t do well with powder forms.

I haven’t checked around yet. Was looking for some reputable places first. Only estimate I’ve had was through my vet so far and that was $40 a tube.

Abler’s is a place in Canada I can order from independently for reduced pricing on omeprazole and is a safe bet, but they don’t offer misoprostol. So I was wondering if there was any place similar that specifically carries it.

Abler is in like Vanautu or something. They illegally sell prescription products. They’re not in Canada.

If you’re looking for another outfit like that, I think Horseprerace is running again.

Is anyone familiar with First Choice Equine. They have a omeprazole/misoprostal mix for $16.99 a tube. I’m curious if they’re a reputable company. I was not aware of Abler’s being illegal, many people in my area have said they were reputable and they’ve used them many times. Thank you for the heads up.

my understanding is you separate when the omeprazole and miso are given timewise. I wonder if taking them together is a problem?

Anyone selling a prescription product without a prescription is doing so illegally. Misoprostal is not available OTC.

@Lacej81. Hi there! This is my first post on the forum. I have been reading for a year but never posted until I saw you post.

I too am in Canada and also looking for the best price on misoprostol. The best I can come up with so far has been $393.12 for 400 (200 mcg) tablets through my local vet. That’s $1.00 a pill which is so expensive.

I called my pharmacist friend in Texas and she told me they sell them for $3.00 per pill. I’m still looking around and will check back in after I talk with more horse owners and another vet. I’d like to hear what you and others on this forum come up with too.

My mare has had an amazing response from the misoprostol after seven frustrating years of using omeprazole and sulcrafate, off and on. The game changer for me was having the vet come out to the barn and do the scope on site and starting the misoprostol. I had my horse scoped four times over four months and saw good results.

1st month scope we saw several “grade three” glandulars and three groupings of gastics. We used Omeprazole, sulcrafate and misoprostol for the month.

2nd month scope she had an amazing response with just one glandular left (50% healed). There was one gastric grouping left but the other two were completely gone. So the vet took my horse off the misoprostol and just kept her on the the omeprazole and sulcrafate.

3rd month scope with just Omeprazole and Sulcrafate saw zero improvement in the one glandular ulcer from previous scopes. Plus, we had an new grouping of gastric ulcers along with the previous one. So we put her back on misoprostol and sulcrafate and cut out the omeprazole.

4th month scope saw complete healing in glandular and gastric areas. Her stomach lining was nice pink and healthy looking! I was a very happy camper.

Vet suggested to keep her on a maintnance dose of misoprostol and minimal sulcrafate (before I ride her).

I changed a lot of other things during this time: i) she has slow feeder low to the ground hay pillows available at all times ii) apple pectin, lecithin and 1/2 cup of aloe vera added to diet in the evening feed iii) Visceral in the morning feed iv) apple cider vinegar in her auto-waterer most days and v) soaked alfalfa cubes every day. Yes - I am obsessive!

This has been three months now and she’s never been happier and looked better. The real test will be after we get through the winter.

I want to cut out or down the misoprostol but am taking my time with this plan.

I have appreciated reading this forum for the past year and have learned a lot from many of you.

Thank you.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience. Miso was the only thing that fully healed my guy. It cured his fecal water syndrome, girthiness, bad mood and refusal to work. We never got more than 50% better with the omeprazole. During the ulcers his coat turned to wire and his tail fell out which I was devastated with because he had the most beautiful tail. It’s all grown back now.

Sadly, I didn’t keep him on a maintenance of it and should have. Im starting to see signs again of the ulcers. I’ve put him back on the omeprazole for maintenance and plan to buy more miso too. Oy! This horse has been more complicated than my child lol. I’m going to consider some of the other pointers you mentioned for supplemental support. thank you!

Do you remember what this was running you and how long it lasted? I’m wondering if this is easier to administer for a maintenance regimen.

Have you tried getting it through a human pharmacy and using GoodRX? That’s what I did when I had my mare on it for 6 months or so (very long, slow taper). I remember it being very reasonable.

It did require one awkward, somewhat humorous discussion with the pharmacist about why I needed so much misoprostal ….
