Missing Donkey, MD

Reposted with permission from Facebook. Dorset equine rescue is a reputable rescue run by a friend of a friend. Someone has to have seen this donkey!

It’s now been over two days since our donkey May has gone missing from a quarantine facility in MD. We had pulled 2 donkeys last week from a kill pen in PA which are now named Milo and May. Our friend who is also our neighbor was on his way to pick them up when he was involved in an accident about half way there and his trailer was totaled. Thankfully he is ok. Since the kill pen only allows pick ups on Thursday, we had to scramble to find someone to pick up the two donkeys. We were able to find someone who owns a quarantine facility in MD. She picked them up for us and let us know that Milo, the 6 month old was very sick and she called her vet to come see him. The vet gave him some meds and has been out a few times to check on him. We hear he’s doing a little bit better. On Saturday evening during a storm, May the standard donkey accidentally got out. They tried to catch her but she disappeared into the dark. We are very worried about her and are asking if we have any equine friends in this part of MD to please keep an eye out for her and also share with your equine friends in MD. The barn she was at is on Kitty Lane in Colora, MD. She is surely scared and as we all know, equines can travel a great distance when they get loose, so who knows where she is now. We don’t know that area at all, but if anyone does know it and wants to help search, or has had a sighting of our lost donkey, please call Penny at (267)745-7437 or the Sheriff’s office at (410)996-5500.
Thank you for your help!

This is pretty much my backyard- and while we don’t have millions of empty acres like out west, we have enough dense woods that it’d be pretty easy for a donkey to hide. At least at this time of year, there’s no way she’d be hungry or thirsty.

In case anyone local wants to help look for a rescue donkey… We have created our own Facebook group to help find May, the missing donkey! Hopefully this page will bring people together and we can get local help organizing a much needed search party. Please share with people in MD and PA who might be willing to take part in the search party. May has gone missing from a quarantine facility run by Penny Parker on Kitti Lane in Colora, MD. The Dorset Equine Rescue in Vermont pulled 2 donkeys (who are now named Milo and May) last week from a kill pen in PA. Our friend and neighbor was on his way to pick them up when he was involved in an automobile accident and could not reach the kill pen. Thankfully he is OK. Since the kill pen only allows pick-ups on Thursdays, we had to scramble to find someone to pick up the two donkeys last Thursday, May 10th. Penny was recommended to us and she picked them up and took them to her quarantine facility where they were going to stay until shipping arrangements could be made. On Saturday evening, May 12th, May escaped from her stall. Her veterinarian tried to track her but because of the storm it was very difficult and May disappeared into the night. We are very worried about her and are asking any equine friends in this part of MD if they might be willing to search, share and keep an eye out for her. We are beyond worried! The barn she was at is on Kitti Lane in Colora, MD. She is surely scared and as we all know, equines can travel a great distance when they get loose, so who knows where she is now. THE DORSET EQUINE RESCUE IS OFFERING A $200 REWARD AND PENNY PARKER HAS OFFERED A $200 MAKING THE TOTAL REWARD $400 for the safe return of our donkey. We don’t know that area at all as our rescue is in Vermont, but if anyone does know it and wants to help search, or has had a sighting of our lost donkey, please call Penny, the owner of the quarantine facility at (267)745-7437 or the Sheriff’s office at (410)996-5500 or The Dorset Equine Rescue at (802)588-0473.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you all for the posts and links. I’m sure the rescue appreciates it.

It’s hard for me to fathom anything missing for days at a time. There really aren’t any woods big enough near me that a horse could get lost and not found. And in my life everything that’s gotten loose comes running when you shake a grain bucket, including one clever pony that came running up the road in the middle of the night.

This donkey could easily hide throughout summer and fall in this area without being seen or going hungry. It’s crazy lush out there right now and we’ve had rain for a week steady with more expected throughout the weekend. When the sun comes out next week the vegetation, which is already thick, is going to explode. I board about 5 miles away from where she got loose and if she heads north into PA or east toward Fairhill there are thousands of acres of woods and fields she could survive in provided she doesn’t run into a feral dog pack.

I hope they find her but it’s not going to be easy and I’m guessing it will more depend on good luck than anything else. Does anyone know where she came from before winding up in the kill pen? She might try to make her way back there.

It’s very possible for that donkey to stay missing for a while, and have plenty to eat and drink.
In 2016, a fully tacked horse was lost for two weeks in a MD state park that is heavily used by riders, bikers and hikers. Search parties were sent out, but it turned out that some random hikers eventually found him.

I believe she’s found. Was in someone’s yard.
