Mizzen Mast mare..? good riding horse?

Riding The Wind Horse Pedigree

Nice 6 yo mare, please give ANY comments…I want to foxhunt, trailride and camp…is this horse out of my league for this? Have not seen her yet…she is sound and retiring from track.

I also would love to hear comments on feet from this line…if someone can. I really like good feet, and am spoiled in that area.(ridden Arabs 30 years)

What I have read so far on COTH…Mizzen Mast is good for sport horse…jumping ect.

THANKS in advance!

My MM is a drop dead gorgeous mare with very good feet. She is athletic and a nice mover but her mentality lacks focus and she is prone to having an attitude. I have not ridden any other MM’s so dont know if it is just her or not.

Would not be my top pick for a pleasure horse just based on my experience with my mare:)

I think I know what you are asking and that you are just curious about generalities in a line, but honestly, each horse is an idividual. This mare has a dam too, not just a sire lol. Is Mizzen Mast the sire, or grans sire or dam sire? I think the dam has as much to say as the sire does (sometimes more depending upon the dams prepotency. Also, nature vs. nurture, how the mare was raised, trained and cared for will also play a big part in expectations. Her conformation is key as are any old injuries etc…

I am always curious whether, if someone responded that Mizzen Masts have bad feet and are Koo-Koo that would cause a poster to pass. That would be a shame.

That said, I do understand that some lines seem to pass on certain traits, so I do “get” your question, but it just sounded a bit specific when so much depends on factors other than the sire.

I have known one Mizzen Mast filly and she was a 2 year old in training. Nice filly, fairly unremarkable as far as her temperament was fine and she fit right in with all of the other babies (which is a good thing). She was a pretty filly and her neck was tied in rather low (by low I mean not high and gave her a “huntery-looking” way of going). This filly had good sized feet and they were in good shape. She was an easy keeper for the short time that I knew her - a pleasure to have in the barn.

Midnight Ride was able to post the link to her pedigree. Her dam is Green Belles.

Thanks!

Ribot is a good sport-horse ancestor to have. And I don’t see anything HORRIBLE on her race record on a quick skim, but I might be missing a long layoff somewhere.

Beyond that, I’d look at what’s in front of you and if you can talk to her trainer, galloper, people like that, who’ve handled her.

My personal opinion of Mizzen Mast is that he has excellent conformation, but I can’t speak to his feet or traits he passes along.

Please post photos if you get them!

We had a Mizzen Mast as a racehorse. He was massive and looked part draft. But he was an incredibly quiet, calm, easy going fellow. Very much like a big dog, you never would have guessed him a TB. Had HUGE huge feet, big pie tins. Couldn’t run much but is now steeplechasing so he’s obviously shown some talent over fences.

MM’s father Cozeene was a very attractive individual who sired some horses of good durability.

A study of her race record might tell you more of this mare than a pedigree. You were given good advice that many other factors are at work — handling, training, etc. that have shaped this mares temperment.

This mare ran empty her last race/ a mile, this , after a 3 month layoff. The race before that was also a distance (mile-16th) with her coming up empty at the end although she placed the race (a week) before>again after a 3 month lay off. Previous to this, for 2 years she raced EVERY month. Something is amiss.

She's obviously tired, and stressed at this distance to keep up with the field. I think a serious vetting would be in order (a BAL for sure) before worrying about a dam or sire in a pedigree.

race records…?

swtvixen,

thanks…that was good information. I do not know how to check race records…is that a paid service? I was only able to look up pedigree.

I did find out from trainer she has a strained susp…but he thought it was minor. I agree…re: serious vetting.

she is probably not right for me, for what I want to do. I hope to go see her and maybe help find her a good landing place. I am told she is very nicely bred for sporthorse.

I suspected a suspensory, those are extremely difficult to resolve(if ever)Hint: those are never Minor!, With goals such as yours, its best to look at horse without *issues*.

Bev@Mid-Atlantic has some horses nicely started at reasonable prices.

swtvixen,

Thanks…I did not know about that info. I have resolved that she is not for me…and all the postings has helped. Its tough hearing about nice horses, tho.

That’s a shame about the suspensory. Those injuries really don’t heal completely, and the mare should stay on the flat without much stress on that leg. I hope she finds a good home.

I have a horse with several healed suspensories, I however only do flat work. It depends on the size and location of said injuries. My horse raced until 9 and rather successfully. I second the suggestion of Bev at Midatlantic. I have two of her horses, including the afformentioned one. She is honest, restarts them, and has a most reasonable adoption contract. I really really like Bev.
