Mongolian Horse Race

I came across this story on YahooNews and was intrigued.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/nightline-fix-abc-news/riders-charge-across-wilds-outer-mongolia-grueling-620-155138252.html?vp=1

The story makes it appear that only westerners were riding, not Mongolians. They were all clearly riding Mongolian horses, but not using Mongolian tack.

Does anyone know anything about this race?

There has been a bit on here before about this. Long riders have this page http://www.thelongridersguild.com/mongolia.htm

but it seems to be from a few years ago & I do remember reading somewhere that at least some measures were being taken to improve things. Not sure what they were, etc.

anyone?

On my bucket list is riding in Central Asia. Probably not the Mongol Derby, though :stuck_out_tongue:

I know someone who competed in the last one. She completed the whole thing and was fine. She came home and was riding in an endurance race three weeks ago and her horse fell on her and she broke her leg badly.

Ooopsie!!

isn’t that always the way?

did she say anything about what it was like riding those horses? I read somewhere that you are supposed to remain standing b/c the gait is so rough. I don’t think I could stand on a horse all day.

I really do want to go to. I have seen trips in Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, maybe Georgia or Anatolia…

By the time I can afford it I will probably be ancient.

Thanks for the info. I sort of figured that there was more to the story.

The Long Riders Guild is a rather biased source, since they see themselves as the divine arbiters of what is good in long distance riding.

The winner is the niece of Lucinda Green (a very big name in eventing).

they were using Barefoot treeless saddles.

Thanks for the other side!

A girl that rides from Darolyn Butler’s barn entered this year and came in 2nd. My barn manger knows Devon and rode with her recently in the Armadillo Ride. That ride is a real challenge! I will just read about it from the safety of my living room!

Yes, Lynn Gilbert of Virginia did complete the ride and tied for 10th place. Then she had a bad fall back at home and really broke up her leg. I found that out from my friend Becky (Virginia) who had a SURPRISE fall off of her darling young horse and broke her arm and ribs and something else I think but can’t remember. As I sit here rubbing my left shoulder/arm where I have a new plate and screws holding my humerus together from a fall off of one of my horses I kinda think my husband just might be sorta right that we are all crazy to be riding horses. Can’t wait to get back to riding but it will be on the older and saner Mighty Mouse. Not trips for me to Mongolia.
