I have a Jaguar monoflap saddle that I love and I’m trying to find the right fit for the girth. I ride lesson horses now after moving home and have a 28” girth. As of now, fully tightened, I have about 2 holes left on either side with this size girth. I am wondering should I go for the 26” as well? Both lesson horses I ride got around the same hole marks so I’m thinking making the 28” is a bit big. Both trainers I’ve rode with haven’t said anything, although I was going to discuss it with them next lesson. However neither of them rode in monoflaps so they may see an issue when there isn’t one or vice versa. Any help would be appreciated!
I think as long as you can get it secured correctly and safely you are fine with what you have
It seems once fully tightened the horse is still happy and the saddle stays where it needs to, on top😅
For ideal fit the buckles should be above the elbow and the end of the girth shouldn’t overlap the saddle pad. If it’s a shaped girth you also need to pay attention to how any contours sit in the horse’s girth groove. You can’t really judge by how many holes are left on your billets since that can vary depending on the saddle and the horse.
How big are the lesson horses? A 28 is on the bigger side for a monoflap but if you’re riding larger (or rounder) horses that may be ok.
The buckles are sitting right below the saddle pad on both. They aren’t round barreled horses by any means. I do have a shoulder relief so it sits back really nice away from the elbow and seems to hug both nice.
As of now I think I could go smaller although I am concerned the girth won’t ride as high as it is now, and instead have the buckle sitting much lower from the pad, but I am unsure if this is ok or not. Both seemed comfortable enough with the main lesson horse I ride seeming very happy and free while jumping. Although, it could be because he’s happy to have someone who can jump moderately decent and seems to be very happy to do grid work and courses so he’s moving forward much easier.
Your girth sounds perfect. It’s better IMO, to have it on the longer side, rather than having a long stretch of just billet against the horse, and potentially having the buckles interfere with the elbows.
Ok, perfect! Thank you! I’m new to the monoflap world so the advice is appreciated.
