I have an 8 yr old mare who is an absolute sweetheart until she cycles. It starts several days before full heat and she gets nippy, hard to saddle and a real handful to ride. I’ve been told to try chasteberry and also MareMagic. Does anyone have any feedback on these products?
I used Mare Magic for at least a year. I didn’t see any change. Regumate worked!
Thank you for sharing. I was hoping to get feedback on this product! How long did it take before you saw improvement once you started the Regumate?
Definitely have seen success with chaste tree berry products…and take them myself! Another option is Positude by Equine Elixers…a mare I leased had to be on Regumate for a while but the Positude actually worked just as well!
Going sideways here, but have you checked her Selenium levels? It is amazing how many places Selenium affects a horse, from reproductive to muscles. Low levels can cause poor cycling, muscle cramping. If horse is worked enough to sweat regularly, they are losing Selenium even faster.
I am saying this from experience, trying to diagnose problems in a competition mare who needed to be kept quite fit. Once we got her Selenium with Vit E correct, all her “problems” went away. No sore back, no crabby behaviour, heats came and went smoothly, barely noticable. I can’t promise results like that on every horse, but getting your horse tested will tell you that lack of Selenium is or IS NOT the problem, before you start dosing her with other things. I really like to stay basic, not doing things with multiple additives.
We top dress each horse’s feed with Selenium and Vit E DAILY, to insure they are getting enough. They each get 1/4 teaspoon daily. Horses need minimal amounts. Ours work, sweat regularly, to lose Selenium, so it needs to be replaced. Our grazing ground, local hay, has no Selenium in it, they do not get a commercial feed with additives, so we need to supply the needed Selenium. They get tested yearly to make sure they are getting enough. Selenium is not something the body can store, it comes and goes. You need to give Vit E with Selenium so the body will absorb Selenium, otherwise Selenium just goes thru, is not absorbed to be used.
Heat cycles in the mares here are regular, no crabby behaviour. Mostly noticable by needing to pee often during work times. No muscle soreness in mares and geldings after works. They move smoothly, stay fit once conditioned and on maintenance conditioning.
Regumate worked right away. My mare was truly uncomfortable when in season, sometimes to the point of colicky. Valley Vet has decent prices on it, so to me $50 for a bag of Mare Magic that you use up pretty quick isn’t worth it, especially when it didn’t work for us
