More about Diamond

They expanded the recall to Canidae, Wellness, and Natural Balance. Be right back with the exact list…

Here we go: http://truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/distributor-states-canidae-natural-balance-and-one-wellness-product-recalled.html#.T6SPELQIc08.facebook
Guess we will be making a more abrupt switch to SOMETHING than originally planned… Throwing out this bag of Wellness $$$$$$$$ :frowning:

Between my vet bills and my throw away food bills, I will need a second job soon.

When I was doing an adoption event last Sunday, I mentioned our food woes to the host who was sells pet food and toys to benefit the rescues. I had noticed he pulled the Taste of the Wild and Canidae products (this was before the May 4th recall). He told me that he’s recommending Orijen instead. Don’t know too much about this brand though.

I’m with you on the vet bills and discarded food… we are on our 4th vet recommended diet and the most affected dog is turning his nose up on it. Our dogs are 90 lbs and up so up until now, we were buying big bags of food up until now!

Good luck!

Here’s the Wellness recall notice. Glad to hear they do their testing prior to shipping and haven’t found anything. Also glad to hear that that their other products are produced in another plant. Still not for sure that I’m comfortable buying Wellness today as a replacement for my TOTW yet…

WELLPET LLC VOLUNTARILY RECALLS ONE RECIPE
OF DRY DOG FOOD
DUE TO SALMONELLA AT DIAMOND PET FOODS’ FACILITY

Tewksbury, Mass. (May 4, 2012) – WellPet LLC announced a voluntary recall of one recipe of Wellness® dry dog food after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility.

All Wellness products are tested for Salmonella and all lots tested negative prior to shipping to customers. The company is voluntarily recalling the select products below. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand foods due to the threat of Salmonella.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

The products involved in this voluntary recall are:

Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Large Breed Puppy, 15 lb. and 30 lb. bags and 5 oz. sample bags with best by dates of JAN 9 2013 through JAN 11 2013.

Best by dates (lot codes) can be found on the back of the bag in the bottom right-hand corner.

No other WellPet recipes, sizes or brands of food are impacted by this voluntary recall.

“As a pet parent myself, I know how important peace of mind is when it comes to the health of our pets, and that is why we require that all of our products undergo testing for Salmonella, among other things,” said Tim Callahan, chief executive officer of WellPet, the maker of Wellness® products. “All of these lots tested negative prior to being released for sale. We are voluntarily taking this additional step to further safeguard our dogs and to put our customers’ minds at ease.”

The majority of Wellness natural products for pets are produced in WellPet’s own modern state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana. WellPet no longer purchases any products from Diamond Pet Foods.

Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, would like replacement product or have additional questions, may call us at (877) 227-9587 (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM through 6:00 PM Eastern time and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 AM through 5:00 PM Eastern time).

It really pisses me off that I specifically asked Diamond about TOTW and Natural Balance a month ago, when this all first started, and they didn’t say anything about either food then. At this point, it looks like the recall affects pretty much every brand they make at the South Carolina plant.

The recall itself doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the company not being forthcoming with this information. Here it is a month later and I’ve already fed most of a recalled bag. I guess I should just be grateful that it didn’t cause any problems, but I’m sure not impressed about how this was handled.

GotGait, that sounds about right. I have a 45-pound dog and a 55-pound dog. I was getting $100/mo. for the raw meat blends, and that’s before adding anything else to complete the diet. Obviously it’d be cheaper to buy a blend and add your own meat, but then I’d have to find a good source for that. I’d also have to figure out exactly what allergy dog can tolerate: I know lamb’s out, but chicken’s questionable as well.

Orijen and their (Champion Pet Food) other brand, Acana are awesome. They are pretty much the only kibble I will feed anymore. Darford appears to be good as well. They are all made in Canada.

OK, what are you all feeding. I’ve been feeding 4Health Sweet Potato and Salmon.

THROW IT AWAY (and don’t touch it either) - as of yesterday (May 4) Diamond has added 4Health to the contamination list and recalled it.

Cripes, is there much that isn’t made at a Diamond plant??? This is ridiculous. I have a TOTW bag that isn’t in the recall, so I am feeding the rest of it but switching brands, AGAIN.

I am tempted to try raw, but I just don’t have the time and patience right now to learn about it, or shop for it. But a quality bag of dog food not made at the Diamond plant is going to likely run me at least an additional $15/bag, and I feed three 50+ lb dogs. Ugh. Horses are looking cheaper all the time.

Off to the pet store later today. I wonder if the better brands are loving the recalls?

So what is everyone feeding. I have 3 big dogs…I need something reasonable…collie has allergies.

Earthborn Holistics. High quality and the price is not so bad either.

I called Taste of the Wild a few minutes ago, and they confirmed that their product is produced at Diamond’s SC plant (at least the product in my area (KY)…she asked specifically where I lived, so perhaps TOTW in other areas may come from a different manufacturing plant). However, she reiterated that there is no recall on any products except the Diamond Naturals, and said at this time they were not aware of any halt in production of other brands at the South Carolina plant.
According to this site ToTW is included in the voluntary recall… from the SC plant. I of course live in SC… and feed ToTW… and the 15lb bag I just bought two days ago is included in the recall. http://diamondpetrecall.com/
Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled several brands produced in its Gaston, South Carolina, plant as a precautionary measure to protect the health and safety of customers and their pets. If your production code has a 2 or 3 in the 9th or 10th position AND an “X” in the 11th position, your product is affected by the recall. If the product you have does not include a 2 or 3 in the 9th or 10th position AND an “X” in the 11th position, your product is not affected by the recall, and you can continue to feed it as usual.

BRANDS AFFECTED BY RECALL:
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
Country Value
Diamond
Diamond Naturals
Premium Edge
Professional
4Health
Taste of the Wild

Looks like I’ll definitely be switching now…

I just started switching to wellness - glad to hear that they make stuff at their own plant (except the puppy food).

And just an FYI reading about people with partial bags of uneaten food - Pet Smart will take ANYTHING back that you’ve purchased from them - just save that receipt. It doesn’t matter if most of the bag is gone, they will take it back and refund the $.

I tried my old guy who has since passed on the Blue Buffalo - took 3 weeks to slowly switch him over to BB from home cooked. When I got to about 50 / 50, he got a bad upset stomach and it was clear that it wasn’t going to work for him. I had a quarter bag, and I took it back and told them what I’d done. They took it back, no questions asked.

That was one of my criteria when picking a new food - I had to be able to get it locally at Petsmart, in the off chance that it wasn’t going to work out, so I could return it.

Here are some decent brands not (to my knowledge, anyway) affiliated with Diamond that are available in my area (central North Carolina), in case anyone needs some additional choices to investigate:

Darford
Nutrisca
Orijen
Acana
Instinct
Prairie
Pinnacle
Evanger’s
Fromm
Before Grain
Back to Basics

Took my partial bag of TOTW back to Tractor Supply this morning. It was actually a mix of TOTW and Wellness but I decided to dump the whole lot since my bag was in the recalled bunch. Hate that I lost a good bit of Wellness in the process. They took it back with no issues once I showed them the production label and I didn’t even have receipt for it. They let me exchange it for another bag of dog food.

TSC had cleared most of the TOTW and 4Health from their shelves except for a few bags that apparently weren’t included in the recall. I wouldn’t touch them with a 40 foot pole though at this point! All of their Wellness was gone (big surprise!) except for a few 5 lb bags of various flavors so I picked up a bag of Blue Buffalo. Fingers crossed that we don’t have any explosive diarrhea attacks from switching cold turkey like this. The Wellness I had mixed in with my TOTW was chicken and so is the BB so hopefully it won’t be too drastic of a change for them. I guess we don’t have much choice though at this point! Fingers crossed!

I guess what’s so concerning is that I bought my bags of TOTW well over a month ago and I would’ve have already finished up the last bag had I not started mixing it with another food. The bags in the store weren’t pulled from the shelves until yesterday. I can’t even imagine how many bags of food people have fed to their pets that either were contaminated or had the potential to be before the companies stepped in. I’m VERY disappointed in brands like TOTW and Chicken Soup who not only allowed their products to be produced by the likes of Diamond but didn’t immediately jump on damage control as soon as Diamond started mentioning recalls.

Some Wellness has now been recalled too.

Just FYI, TOTW and Chicken Soup are Diamond brands and have been from the getgo. The other brands are owned by other companies and manufactured by Diamond. There may even be a couple others in that list now owned by Diamond, but TOTW and Soup have always been Diamond products.

Well, crap. I feed TOTW and my dog threw up (ON ME) the other morning for the first time in the 3 years I’ve had him.

Is Natural Balance a safe option?

You’ll probably puke in your shoes, but I’ve been feeding Science Diet LB Adult to my dogs.

Made in the USA, haven’t had a recall. Every time i think about switching to something else it seems that there’s a recall.

I’m scared. So I’m sticking with it. I’ve been feeding SD to my pets for 15+ years. My friends have lost pets due to the contamination of products in other foods.

I don’t think SD is the BEST food, but damnit, it feels safe and our critters are doing well on it.

I was going to switch to Nutro–my friend’s dog died during a recall. I was going to switch to Diamond, same thing. Now I’m just scared. Beyond raw, which I don’t feel that comfortable with due to MY knowledge and time? I don’t know what to do.

Seems like if it’s not all sourced here in the US, we’re at risk. With SD, the only thing not sourced via the US is the lamb from Australia and I don’t feed lamb.

So I’m sticking with it for now.

I just switched to Hi-Tek Rations grain free lamb & sweet potato (Had had been feeding Diamond Naturals lamb & rice). 30# is $39.95.

I returned my bag of 4Health, Tractor Supply gave me a full refund and I had only 1/4 bag left. One dog vomited last night and another had the runs. I really think it’s a coincidence, but better safe than sorry. One dog is on veterinary diet, so the other 3 will be getting chicken and rice today.
