More about Diamond

I haven’t seen Eagle on any lists, but I did find this Apex brand under voluntary recall even though nothing tested as bad
http://www.petsitusa.com/blog/

Everything I’ve read about Wellness also indicates nothing tested as contaminated, but they were recalling as a precaution

Received this email from Wellness today:

Thank you for taking the time to write about Wellness products.

As a company that is passionate about pets, our goal has always been to make the highest quality, natural pet food possible. We have expanded our own manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana and are currently in the process of bringing the majority of our Wellness dry food production into this facility. Our facility includes a state-of-the-art onsite quality and safety laboratory and advanced extrusion systems all designed to produce the most nutritious, high-quality natural pet food possible, with a focus on food safety and compliance with regulations. We already had plans to exit production at Diamond, before this recall happened, and are no longer producing any products there.

Currently our dry Wellness products are made at the following locations:

American Nutrition
Hagen Pet Foods
WellPet - Mishawaka

Our Holistic Select and Eagle Pack products are made 100% at our WellPet facility in Indiana.

In you have specific questions about certain products please call our Consumer Affairs Department at (800) 225-0904. Our representatives are available to assist you Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time.

Thanks again for contacting us.

Here’s the email I received from Blue Buffalo this morning. They are not affected by the recall or affiliated with Diamond so add them to the “OK” list

[I]Thank you for contacting us. Please be assured that none of our products are involved in any recalls. We also voluntarily test all products for salmonella prior to leaving the manufacturer. BLUE is not affiliated with Diamond Pet Foods in any way. You can find a complete list of products affected by the Diamond Pet Food recall by following this link, http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/05/diamond-pet-foods-etc-recalls---2012/.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Regards,
Larissa

Blue Buffalo had a recall earlier this year.

http://bluebuffalo.com/news/vitamin-d-voluntary-recall

They were also involved in the melamine recall in 2007:

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/brand_list.cfm?brand=Blue%20Buffalo%20(RICE%20GLUTEN)&pet=Dog

While not involved in this particular recall involving Diamond, I wouldn’t call them “okay” :frowning:

Ugh! yes I just googled it after I posted that last comment and saw the prior recalls… I give up

What did BB do after the melamine issue, which was from Chinese-sourced ingredients? If they stopped using Chinese ingredients altogether, I’d be happier.

The Vit D issue, while not great, is among one of the least offensive problems.

I had tried BB with my guys and after a day, they just would not eat it anymore. I had to mix it with mostly TOTW to get them to finish it.

My cat won’t eat it so I didn’t even try the dog.

My dog had diarhea on BB…then I switched to TOTW…sigh.

I think it’s inevitable that any pet food company can at any given time have a problem. It’s industrial food in large volume dealing with meat. They can’t even keep it out of the human food supply; it’s going to happen with dog food too.

Yep, everyone, at some point, will have some problem with something.

It’s what’s done at that point that matters. It’s what happens after that that matters.

One problem - $sh!t happens. Two problems? Hmmm. Bring in a 3rd? No thanks.

Sonesta, Orijen and Acana do not source any of their vitamins or minerals from China. This is directly from the company. I have posted this previously in this thread.[/QUOTE]

Simkie - according to the TOTW rep I emailed back/forth with a few months ago, the companies that state they get their vitamins from a European company are not exactly telling the truth. There is some sort of loophole where the Europeans are actually selling made-in-China-vitamins.

Sonesta is right - at least according to the perfunctory research I’ve done, almost all our vitamins (including HUMAN supplements) come from China.

I would really be interested in sending supplements to a lab for testing. Does anyone have a suggestion for an independent lab?

I realize supplements are a largely unregulated area; I’m not as worried about inefficacy as I am about contamination with metals/etc.

Check out this article for some fun. (powdered human flesh in capsules, from China) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17980177

What about Canadian-sourced vitamins? Are they ultimately coming from China as well?

I am SO OVER China from an environmental perspective, I can’t stand it.

2 more foods just added to recall list…

Just saw this latest addition to the recall list:

United States

Pet Food Safety Recall: Apex Pet Foods recalls Apex Chicken and Rice Dog dry dog food (20-lb and 40-lb bags; Production code ACD0101B32; Best by date 24-Jan-2013), because the product, which was manufactured in Gaston, South Carolina for Apex by Diamond Pet Foods, may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in South Carolina only.

Pet Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market advises its customers that
Natural Balance Vegetarian Dog Food (5-lb bags; UPC 7 23633 80855 2; Lot code NBV1201; Best by Dec 9, 2012) has been recalled by Diamond Pet Foods and may be contaminated with Salmonella.

I started taking glucosamine for a problem with my hands, but then I found out it all comes from China. Straight into the trash can.

Perhaps I’m a naive idealist, but isn’t this likely the safest time to feed one of these brands as the companies are laser-focused on safety right now and don’t want to risk any more illnesses and/or bad press?

Granted, I’m in CA so I haven’t been effected by this recall.

Saturday, May 5th, I switched Riley from ToTW Lamb and Rice ( feed that flavor as well as the Bison) to Earthborn Holistics cold turkey. I was expecting sloppy poos, gas, a turned up nose to the new food (all they had was fish flavor trial bags, he hates fish).
And all I got was; a licked clean bowl, an excited dog to eat his food, and poos nice and firm and HALF the size!!!

I picked up a medium size bag today as I was really pleased with it.

Its only $5.00 more (including tax), and an additional 60 calories per cup (370 compared to 430). I dropped him from almost 3 cups a day (1.5 in AM 1.5 in PM) to a heaping cup in the AM to a cup in the PM. (less food!)) So I will see how his weight fares with the higher calories, I am sure there will be some adjusting.

So a big thank you to Simkie, for her assistance on picking out a great food at an affordable price and a thank you to Diamond for allowing the ball to drop and forcing me to change foods.

Sort of off topic, but WTH? Vegetarian dog food? I had to look that up to make sure it really existed.

I asked on the Raw feeder thread, but since this seems to have more eyeballs, I’ll repost my question here:

With the Diamond yadda yadda barf yadda Salmonella recently many of the comments around FB have slung to the effect “Well thats why we feed raw.” I literally cannot wrap my mind around this concept because it seems, on the surface, like the most jaw droppingly hypocritical statement I’ve ever read. And it MUST be, and again, no snark here, because I’m ignorant on the subject. I’m not trying to start a war, I just dont. get. it. Because I cannot fathom how a dog kibble with a 4/6 million chance of salmonella is somehow more toxic than RAW meat. RAW chicken. What are the steps taken when preparing a raw diet to eliminate this worry? Why is this not a problem or concern?

 …so did I. Never heard of it but it’s for real:

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/Vegetarian.html

Says it made “made specifically for dogs prone to meat-based protein sensitivities.”

Ingredients don’t look too bad, at least it doesn’t contain any soy or beet pulp.
